Wilshere set for Ramsey role? Sol's off.. again

27 Jul 2010 - By Mean Lean

The pre season friendly is on at a convenient time for me today as I plan to watch the game then go straight to my usual Tuesday evening football at 8pm.

We should witness a team closer to the real deal this afternoon with the world cup travellers having had the time to be put through their paces. According to Young Guns a few of the younger members will be flying home as they nurse injuries.

Craig Eastmond, Armand Traore, Henri Lansbury and Conor Henderson will take no part in the last game of the Austrian tour. However Jack Wilshere continues to be part of Arsene's plans.

Wilshere has spoken about his last 12 months and how he became such a well known name.

Wilshere said:

"Yes, I think I have got used to it, The boss helped me a lot. Obviously I was frustrated not to play but it is probably the right thing, and then letting me go out on loan to get some experience. So I think I have handled it quite well, yes."

"I think things come more naturally, Obviously you are fitter because you've got match fitness. Things just come more naturally to you."

It was pretty much this time last year when Jack Wilshere really made a name for himself. Jack lit up the Emirates cup, showing balance, grace, no fear and confidence that was far beyond his years. Then came all the talk of playing for England and being a starter in the Arsenal team. Wilshere was now supposed to be ahead of Denilson in the team even though both players have totally different roles to the team.

Jack's hype spiraled out of control whilst his form had dipped along with injury. Wenger took him out the lime light and eventually lent him to Bolton, giving him the chance to play regular first team football at a good level. Good compared to the Arsenal reserves.

I am glad that Wilshere was able to take his chance and show everyone what he can do. Hopefully this time he is physically stronger than he was last year and the game time will give him the experience to make the difference in the Arsenal first team. With Aaron Ramsey missing for the early part of this season, I would like to see Wilshere take his place in the squad, being brought in from the bench with twenty minutes to go until he is given his chance to start.

One player who is looking increasingly likely not to play alongside Wilshere is Sol Campbell. Reports are coming out that he is set for a medical with Newcastle United, after being likely to sign for Celtic and then Sunderland.

It was suggested that Campbell would sign on again for Arsenal but that does not appear to be the case today. I would really like Campbell to stay, not just for his playing experience but for his desire to win, it became infectious at the end of last season. If Campbell does sign on elsewhere then it would be extremely likely that Wenger will dip his hand into the piggy bank and bring in another central defender. Three first teamers and a youngster would be very thin. I'd be surprised if Arsene went into the season with the numbers we have in defence. Many are panicking about our defence and goalkeeping options but I would like to remind everyone that most of the transfer action happens at the end of the window, especially with Arsenal. We have roughly a month left of the transfer window so I suggest taking a chill pill and watch and enjoy the players we currently have in our squad.

Hopefully we should have plenty to talk about after the game this evening. Enjoy the game.

Back tomorrow.

As far as I am concerned, nothing is lost with Campbel decision to join Newcastle Utd. Where else can he get to play every game? I'd play Djourou before Sol any day of the week coz the man has no legs or stamina left. Another thing to consider, he has also recently married which does'nt help. I hear his missus is a bit dated so she may need more rounds to get filled lest there wont be any offsprings.

"Sol had a medical for me also. Still waiting for his decision."...classic! lol

I have to amitt I am in the boat of panicking fans! I just wish Wenger would get his business done quicker. We defo need another defender asap. I think we still need one even if Sol signs for us.

Look at the past few years, our centerbacks always get injuries which keep them out at the business end of the season! Look at last season, if we had of had a bit more depth who knows we might of won the league!

Come on Wenger get the money out!

So everyone should have 10 world class centre backs?? last season was a freak occurance a squad needs 3 really top quality centre backs 1 experienced centre back and 1 youngster. When you consider the new 25 man squad rule you can have 2 players for every position and then an extra 3 thats 4 centre backs and maybe 1 more if you think its a problem position, a player under 21 doesnt have to be registered so happy days for our squad depth. We have Vermaelen Djouruo Koscilney as our 'top class' centre backs Campbell might still be the experienced head and then Norveit doesnt need to be registered he can also cover RB and CDM. Versatility will be so important this season thankfully we have Eboue Song JET and Nordveit. So id Campbell stays we CAN sign one more centre back giving us 5 but the likes of Chelsea cant just have massive squads these days so injuries will be a key deciding factor this year if 4 of your centre backs get injured you will be relying on youngsters and that goes for everyone. The new rule was brought in to help lower wage costs. In the league the top 3 last season all had wages of over 110m thats unlikely to go down but the Portsmouth situation wont happen again.

Although i would like to see a new defender i think wenger wont sign one and use nordveit instead which is not bad

I am a bit split on the Sol situation. On one hand I'd hoped he would stay and play a role similar to what he did towards the end of last season but only in the less important games, if there's any such thing. But if he does sign for New C, that means we should hopefully be getting a new face (preferably someone who can do a job as DM as well). I just hope Wenger does not stick fast to his words of last season about having only 4 central defenders(counting Howie N) with Song to fill in when required.

My first post here,bt i think wenger will give us what we all want.

can not believe theres 18 days to go to the start of the season.we have not signed a keeper(fucking unbelieveable when you look at the keepers we got)and we now have just 3 centre halfs with djourou coming off injured once agian.(are version of L spud king always injured)what is wenger thinking of. if anyone as any idea please let me know.
