2003/04 vs 2009/10 team comparisons / Wenger the confidence builder

The first thing that was quite apparent was that we had a team full of men, all in the peak of their powers. Physically imposing, remarkably self assured and the balance just looked great

Feeling somewhat worse for wear today, was up into the early hours of this morning with a few mates and we thought it was a good idea to throw in the invincibles DVD.

With the amount of football that I already watch and every day life thrown into the mix (or is it the other way round) I do not usually have or take the time to watch old Arsenal seasons, so it had been a while. Interestingly enough I said in yesterday’s blog, rather tongue in cheek that we will be bringing all the invincibles back to the club so I was intrigued to see what and how much has changed.

The first thing that was quite apparent was that we had a team full of men, all in the peak of their powers. Physically imposing, remarkably self assured and the balance just looked great. It gave me great confidence to know that our current squad are not even close to being at their very peak.

Although it is highly unlikely that we will ever mirror the unbeaten season I honestly believe that this team can become even better should they stick together and keep improving together.

The one thing that we do not have is a Thierry Henry, wow that guy wasn’t too bad was he? Times goes on and new teams evolve, and sometimes you do not realise what you had for so many years. Surely he had to be the best player in the world at that time.

Discussions went on throughout the night. Which current player from the current crop could get into the 2003/2004 team? who is the better passer, Dennis or Cesc? Could the current side win the league in season 2003/2004? If both teams played against each other at their very best which side would come out on top.

As there is little to discuss it would be interesting to hear your take on some of those questions in the comments section. It helps if you have watched the highlights recently I guess, but even if you haven’t, what are your views?

Moving on from the past and back to our exciting future, a few players have been speaking to the media about Arsene and the club.

Aaron Ramsey has spoken very highly of his manager and has given us a little bit of an insight into how he manages his players.

Ramsey said:

“There is no question he looks after the youngsters like that, he has brought through so many young players. He has given them opportunities, developed them, and turned them into great players. I hope he can do that with me.

“He doesn’t shout at you, he is relaxed and tells you ways that you can improve. He is also very quick to praise if you do something very well in a game.

“If you make an assist instead of trying to shoot yourself, then he will tell you how great you are but he will always tell you the negatives too.”

I tell you what, there are not many players who have worked under him that have had a bad or even slightly negative thing to say against Arsene. He seems to spend much of his time giving his players confidence and belief in themselves. Wenger appears to be the type of person who will give his time to everyone from the first team down to the youth. It is no surprise that the word father has been used many times from many different players when describing the great man.

As for Aaron Ramsey he must be very highly thought of behind the scenes at Arsenal. 18 years old and a member of the first team squad. Ramsey has the potential to be one of the best midfielders in the Premier League and I am sure that will happen in time.

What I have learnt probably more than anything else in football over the years is the amount a player can develop and improve. I still think this is lost upon many Gooners these days, so anything other than spending vast amounts of money on overrated players is seen as not making progress. Luckily for us, Arsene has a little more sense than Rafa Benitez.

Mikel Silvestre feels that the team have learned from our defeats in Manchester.

Silvestre said:

“In those two defeats, we learned that we are not far from being a winner, We scored goals away from home which is good and I am looking forwards to the big games again this season to test ourselves.”

Indeed that is what we need, we need a good victory against one of our rivals. We need to beat a Chelsea 3-0 or a 2-0 away victory at Anfield. This team need that so they can prove to themselves that they are the best and not just the side with potential.

Right, must go. So much to do in such precious little time. Before I do go, I would like to point you towards an article written by Ole Gunner regarding our defending this season so far. Article here.

Back again tomorrow.
