I see Sol Campbell as a temporary measure until Johan Djourou comes back to the fold. Campbell can pass on his know how to the likes of Bartley, Ayling and Djourou who all have a big future at the club
Well well well, look who’s showed up. It is the old boy Sulzeer Jeremiah Campbell. Arsene Wenger has gone against his usual policy of not bringing back players who have already left the club. After flicking through the big bad world of Arsenal online support, the reaction is pretty mixed as I guess you find with most subjects. Many Gooners feel it is a good idea and plenty are up in arms. Get out of those arms for a moment and listen up.
Initially I was uncertain about what he could bring the club at his age and yes, I still have reservations about how quickly he can readjust to life as a Premier League and Arsenal player. Our team today is much more technical than it was in his day which is funny to say when you had players like Pires, Henry and Bergkamp popping it around.
But in the cold light of day we are currently (I say currently for good reason it seems) a man larger, quite literally you could say. We have been crying out for added experience at the back [tick], we need a player who can come in that knows the Premier League [tick], he needs to adapt to Wenger’s system asap [tick], we need someone powerful from set pieces who can deal with the likes of Drogba [tick]
How many more ticks does one need? Yes, he is no spring chicken and he isn’t going to do a Tommy V and stride forward and bend the ball into the top corner but Tommy V’s do not grow on trees. I am a poet and I didn’t even know it. Wow, what wit, I better stop now because I am talking ….
Sol Campbell threw on the shirt last night and trotted out against the West Ham reserves, funnily enough he lasted 45 minutes and came off at half time. I swear we have a joke in there somewhere.
All jokes aside for as long as I can last, Sol has been training with Wenger’s squad for around two months now. He has been talking, working and quite possibly socialising with the players, so obviously Wenger has seen something that he likes. Sol sounded very positive and determined when speaking about returning to Arsenal. He has plenty of hunger [insert own joke if you wish] and feels like he can do a job for the club.
I wouldn’t want to go down the road of England places, to be honest I do not care too much for that but his main objection should be to get himself in the Arsenal side.
One thing I thought of last night was the Arsenal team of the decade, some selected Gallas and Campbell as their partnership. How funny is that? Not very I know but it is interesting how Sol has gone back to the future and could be a part of our future success.
Sol looks like a big guy, not as trim as he used to be but not playing football since his Notts County showing is possibly the reason for that. Wenger will have his fitness staff working closely with Sol and will want to get him to the required weight before he gets any games under his belt.
I see Sol Campbell as a temporary measure until Johan Djourou comes back to the fold. Campbell can pass on his know how to the likes of Bartley, Ayling and Djourou who all have a big future at the club. The more experienced figures in the squad the better for the younger guys who all play in the same position. Everyone is a winner.
There is one downside to this though, cut the smiles and jokes for a moment, we have one fellow at the club who probably isn’t all smiles right now. Big Phil Senderos is looking increasingly likely to be leaving the club probably in January, if not definitely in the summer. He has stated the fact that he needs games before the world cup and if he continues at Arsenal he will not get those games. His time on the pitch was already limited before the probable introduction of Sol Campbell so you do not have to be a genius to work out that his future lies elsewhere.
I will shed a tear when he leaves, at least a quick mental tear as I always liked his personality, his desire to lead from the back and willingness to throw his head where it hurt. He made mistakes, he suffered from a lack of confidence at times and he didn’t always fill you with confidence when in possession of the ball but he was a good guy and I like good guys.
I think the one memory I will keep is his man of the match display against Real Madrid at Highbury. I am pretty sure it was man of the match. If anyone can back me up on that in the comments then I will be grateful but he was a colossus that day. If he continued that form and progressed from that point then I have no question that he would be in the team today. He must have downed some serious red bull that day.
I almost sound like he has just passed away, jeez.
Pictures have already been displayed last night but I was left bemused whilst watching Sky Sports News. Emmanuel Adebayor was talking about the tragic events in Africa, he looked very distraught and I must say I felt sorry for him, it must have been a horrible situation to be involved with, I set aside my football feelings until his shirt caught my eye. He was wearing an Arsenal T-shirt. Why, knowing that you are going to be talking on television would you be wearing an Arsenal shirt?
I am sure football is probably not on the forefront of his mind right now and I understand that but it is a strange thing to do when you have moved to another club. I am sure the Manchester City fans will be wearing a slight frown today as many have not been overly excited about his recent form.
I suppose you cannot blame anyone for turning to Arsenal for comfort. Anyhoo, he is no longer a concern to us right now, my sympathies go out to him and the Togo national side but once Manchester City come back to the Emirates then all that will change.
All this talk of Sol, I missed the opportunity to mentioned the hat trick that Jay Emmanuel-Thomas scored last night in the reserve game against West Ham. He proved to be a success at Blackpool and has come back to Arsenal with something to prove.
He has been on the bench for some of the recent league games and is hoping to get a chance in the FA Cup game coming up. Perhaps that is something that he and Arsene have already spoken about, we shall wait and see. I am sure Wenger will move the FA Cup even further down his list of priorities this time as the games are coming thicker and faster than the ready money round (apologies to the youngsters who won’t have the foggiest as to what I am talking about)
I wouldn’t be surprised if Sol was to get a run out in that same FA Cup game, I do not for one moment think that he will be included in the squad at Bolton as Sky Sports are trying to build up. Nothing to do with the game being live or anything.
It appears that Arsenal are looking to bring in Bolivian U-21 captain Samuel Galindo. I wrote about the story in the early hours which you can read here. Sorry, I am too lazy to write it again.
Speaking of youngsters, take a look at this skill from new kid on the block Wellington Silva. He looks a player doesn’t he? Lets just hope he turns out more Ronaldo than Quincy Owusu-Abeyie.
Back again tomorrow.
