The unfortunate or fortunate (depending on how you view it) we have not had a fully fit squad for quite a while now so you expect that we never have an occasion where 3 or 4 top players are fighting for a starting berth in the same position
Horray! We can all get on with life, I flicked on Sky Sports News (yep, again!) and saw the yellow scrolling news at the bottom, it is actually quite a coup. Arshavin is the perfect age to bring quality now and old enough to leave a door opened for young Jack.
There seems to be some sort of commotion about the deal being after the deadline and other clubs (or reporters) being upset about it. Well can I suggest something to them all? Go and take a run and jump.
I have always believed that with a fully fit squad or even close to a fully fit squad we would have a wonderful team who would be right up there but include an adjusted, match fit and match sharp Andrey Arshavin then wow, the possibilities are endless. I was trying to think of a side when everyone is fit and believe me, it is not easy. Can Arsene play two strikers and still incorporate Nasri, Rosicky and Arshavin? And that is not including England international Theo Walcott.
The unfortunate or fortunate (depending on how you view it) we have not had a fully fit squad for quite a while now so you expect that we never have an occasion where 3 or 4 top players are fighting for a starting berth in the same position.
I watched the media coverage of Arshavin and loved the ‘I am Gooner’ quote, almost sounding like Borat. Fantastic. You know what? I just have to say hats off to Arshavin for learning English, losing a hell of a lot of money both in wages and signing on fee all because he wanted to play for Arsenal. You could say that we were the only ones in for him but these days so many people are money driven he could have easily bought out his contract and joined someone for nothing in November (I think it was) along with a massive signing on fee and monster wages.
Apparently we pay an initial £12 million with the rest in add on’s if those targets are met. When you think that money wasters down the road spent £14 million on Defoe, £14 million on Palacios and another £12-15 million on Keane it is infact madness.
Arsene Wenger seemed pretty happy about his new recruit.
“Andrei Arshavin is a player I have admired for a long time.
“He is a versatile player with great experience, who will add real quality to our squad.
“Andrei is an exciting impact player with a huge amount of ability and has been an influential force with both Zenit St Petersburg and the Russian national team in recent seasons.”
If you look at ‘Wenger player’ in the dictionary you should see a picture of Arshavin with a cheeky grin. He is the exact talent that Arsene looks for. Touch, Vision and Intelligence.
I have broken down some of his strong points in video clips in a recent article that I wrote so you can catch that HERE
So that was Ivan Gazidis’ first involvement in an Arsenal transfer, I say sack him, it took too long. Boooooo!! Obviously that was tongue in cheek but I did read a fan complaining that we should have paid them whatever the wanted and we could have gained some extra points. This was on the day that we signed him. Why do some people enjoy complaining for complaining sake? I just do not understand how you can go through life putting a shitty spin on everything Arsenal.
The man Ivan has been very complimentary of our manager.
“Arsene is entwined in the club, and feels a sense of responsibility,” Gazidis told The Guardian.
“I think he loves the club. There’s [no] situation I can imagine that would lead to Arsene wanting to leave Arsenal. We have one of the best managers in the world, if not the best, who has redefined the club and has taken us to a point where everyone is talking about fifth as a crisis. Arsene isn’t happy to be in fifth place,” he added. “But we believe and he believes, more importantly, in the group of young players that he has. He believes that there is unfinished business.
There certainly is unfinished business. Losing Arsene Wenger would be the worst possible thing that could happen to this club. Many fans look far too long term in my opinion and cannot quite see the overall project. Not winning now is a tragedy to some. I look forward to a very exciting future with Arsenal and hopefully short term as well.
Squid Boy is back (round of applause for him please) and has come back with a very well written piece on Arshavin, so click click click here!
Back again tomorrow.
