Thoughts on our striking options

Eduardo and Van Persie is a frontline that I would like to witness over the course of a few back to back games but my first thoughts are that they are not suited to each other.

I hate International weeks, not only because I do not get to watch and support my beloved Arsenal but also because I very rarely have very much to say, well at least anything that could be interpreted as interesting by a few readers.

We are going to start with Zenit St Petersburg saying to the media that they want £20 million for Arshavin and Arsenal are only willing to pay half that. Oh, sorry, I feel like we have been here before, moving on.

This weekend we face a Premier League side which gives us the chance to claw… hang on someone is speaking in my ear piece. Oh we have no weekend game to look forward to, so apologies for that.

Eduardo! Now there is a subject we can converse about. Deadly Eddie is back playing for his country tonight in a friendly. It is a great chance for him to gain some valuable match fitness, and sharpness. He can have as many training sessions as he wants but he will never get to where he needs to be without playing competitive matches.

I have spoken about our strike force on many occasions and find it very interesting how all of our forwards are different in their styles. Van Persie the talented match winner, Adebayor the physical big man, Eduardo the finisher, Bendtner the tall link man and Vela the instinctive goalscorer.

This to me is a strength and weakness at the same time. I have been used to Arsene having partnerships which are bought to suit a system. Albeit a system that he has changed a few times over the years.

Bergkamp and Wright was his first forward line. A forward line that linked up the whole pitch from bottom to top. Bergkamp dropped off and could receive midfielders passes, Wright then knew his great movement would be found by arguably the worlds best ‘number 10’

Along came a 17 year old Anelka, who played in the position that the legend Ian Wright did but added more electric pace but the same partnership. Henry was a more all round version of Anelka but once again the same system and it proved to be our best partnership in the clubs history.

As Arsene has evolved this new 3rd team into a possession footballing team with winger fullbacks he seems to have altered the forward front line. Van Persie and Adebayor are currently first choice since Thierry Henry has left the club has been his new preferred front line. In my eyes these two do not combine the way that Henry and Bergkamp did before them. You very rarely see Van Persie drop off the front and Adebayor make a run that the Dutchman finds him with. They seem to be two separate forwards doing their own jobs on the pitch. Of course they do exchange passes and have assisted eachother in the past but not on a regular basis.

Now we have an injury to Adebayor, who is likely to be out for 3 weeks or so. Bendtner is the player most likely to come in for Adebayor. I personally cannot see a natural chemistry between himself and Robin as they both occupy the same areas on the pitch. Funnily enough, I think they probably combine more than Ade and RVP but you do not have much of an outlet with those two.

Eduardo and Van Persie is a frontline that I would like to witness over the course of a few back to back games but my first thoughts are that they are not suited to each other. I could well be proved wrong as Eduardo has great movement and any player with vision will enjoy that.

You want the point to all this don’t you? erm.. oh yeah I remember. The point is now that Adebayor is injured he has to be replaced by a player who does not have his strengths. Bendtner will not play on the shoulder of the last man and run in behind. If we select Eduardo then he won’t be able to hold up the ball and dominate in the air. I just feel that it can cause a bit of instability for the midfield players. The plus side is obviously that you can have different options when a game isn’t working or use different forwards against different opposition but that is more for the Rafa Benitez school of management where partnerships are never really forged.

What I would love to see if a fit Eduardo playing for the whole season as he is without doubt our best finisher and would end up with a nice tally next to his name come the end of the season. But we know that football isn’t just about goals, it is about partnerships and helping the team gel together

Maybe it comes down to me not letting go of Dennis Bergkamp *sniff sniff*

ok, well that is enough of that for now. Enjoy the Internationals tonight … yeah right!

Back again tomorrow.
