YourVision – How do you solve a problem like Gallas?
Arsenal has no time to think, the transfer window is about to slam shut. They are faced with an offer to get rid of a problem child, and to get a world-class player in return. They go for it. Transfer window slams shut.

I have a theory that I was looking to get some feedback on. It has to do with Arsenal having both Toure and Gallas, and how that happened. If I remember correctly, Chelsea had been after Cole for some time, tapping him in a hotel room and such. Cole had been pushing to leave because he felt betrayed, hated that everyone spoke French, and some other reasons that I am sure made sense in his head.
My personal theory is that his wife told him that he looked good in blue, and that he should start wearing a blue jersey at work. Sine he lacked the balls to stand up to his lady, he decided it would be easier to play for Chelsea.
But I digress. So Chelsea is after Cole, and Arsenal is holding out for more money. Unfortunately this all occurred during a time when Chelsea decided that they weren’t going to overpay for players; I am sure that you are all aware that this didn’t last long. Well it gets to the end of summer and Chelsea have not upped their offer, and Arsenal is beginning to worry that Cole will be disruptive during the season. I think that he had threatened to have the missus stand outside of Arsene’s window and sing everyday. Then Chelsea at the last minute offer their own problem child, Gallas, who had threatened to score a hat trick for the other team if he isn’t traded, and cash.

I’m sure that night, someone realized that Sol Cambell no longer played for Arsenal; having mover ‘abroad’ to Portsmouth. Gallas was so good at Chelsea, because he played with an aggressive, strong CB, Terry. Toure was so good at Arsenal because he played with a strong, aggressive CB, Cambell. What to do now?
The biggest reason that the issue wasn’t solved until now is that Gallas was injured so much the first season. When he did play, and the partnership with Toure struggled, it was because they were getting used to each other.
Now we have had Gallas for two seasons, and it seems that there are games when we need a strong, confident (not Senderos yet) CB. Especially against teams that like to use the long ball, big striker tactic.
So what is to be done? We have two good, small, quick CBs, three if you count Song. We have no dominant, strong, mean, nasty; I’ll kill your brother, Vidic types. I suggest that we sell Gallas, and here is why. His wages are high, and them coming off of the payroll will open up money to resign other good players. He is four years older than Toure. He has the most recognizable name, and hopefully will command the biggest transfer fee.
Side note: This does not mean that I don’t rate Gallas. I think that he is a talented player, who, like all players, needs to be put in a position to maximize his strengths.
If we sell Gallas, then we use the money to buy a top notch big CB (who that is, is open to debate). We pair that player with Toure, giving us the big, small/quick combo that worked so well for Toure in the past. We then have Song as Toure’s backup, and Senderos as big CB’s backup. We give Senderos a few seasons to prove that he is a top notch CB (remember he is still young now). If not, then Nordtveit can take his place.
I think that the Gallas signing was a mistake, made under enormous pressure. It isn’t Gallas’s fault; still Arsenal needs to fix it soon. This is just one suggestion as to how.
What do people think? And who would you like to sign for the big CB role?
