YourVision – In Defence of Nicklas Bendtner
His international goal scoring record for Denmark currently reads 9 goals in 28 games, which when you consider that he’s only 21, it’s pretty impressive. So he definitely has the potential to be an international class player

On the 11th Feb, Arsenal Vision posted an article I wrote in support for Denilson. Due to the recent abuse from a section of the Arsenal faithful, I thought it would be a great opportunity for me to write another article in support for one of our promising young forwards, Nicklas Bendtner.
How anyone can criticise this guy, I’ll never know. If you have a look at his goal scoring achievements this season, they stand out very nicely indeed:
Carling Cup – 2 goals in 3 games
FA Cup – 1 goal in 3 games
Champions League – 2 goals in 5 games
Premiership – 3 goals in 10 Premiership starts (he has come off the bench in an additional 10 league games this season).
You have to say that the above stats are very good, considering his place in the squad is as a back-up to Emmanuel Adebayor. This season Wenger has mainly used him as an impact sub, but when he has come on, he has made vital contributions to the team (crucial goals scored after coming on against Bolton at home and Hull away in the Premiership and Dynamo Kyiv in the Champions League).

Another factor that needs to be taken into play is that he has hardly featured up front this season. He has spent the majority of his time on the flanks, which makes it even harder for me to see/hear him get criticised. The amount of abuse (actually it was joking laughter) he received at the Bolton game when he misplaced a couple of passes was absolutely shocking to hear. Yet when he scored the vital winner in that game, I bet you those who booed him were chanting his name to the rafters.
What is refreshing to see is that he hasn’t moaned, whilst being played out of position, which shows he is willing to help the team out at all costs.
Nicklas Bendtner is a confident character. He personally thinks that when all the forwards are fit, he should be starting and he is very happy to express this claim. Where’s the harm in that? I’d rather he came out with this statement, rather than hide in the background. The abuse he received for wearing those coloured boots was also blow out of proportion. I don’t care what coloured boots he puts on, as long as he works his socks off for the Arsenal and that he contributes in the scoring stakes, which he has done this season.
Now some of you may laugh at this next statement, but I actually Nicklas Bendtner is a better finisher than Emmanuel Adebayor. I know Bendtner has missed some easy chances this season, but if he were to gain an established run in the team as a forward, I am convinced his shots to goal ratio would be better than Adebayor’s (who in my opinion needs around 6 attempts in order to convert a chance).
Don’t forget that this is the same guy that Bayern Munich was reportedly interested in signing in the Jan transfer window, as well as Chelsea in the close season.
I think that the people who boo him need to be very careful. He is only 21, so he has enough time ahead of him in order to improve his game. I personally don’t want to see a promising youngster leave the club, due to a section of the fans disliking him. So let’s get behind him and stop booing him (and the team for that matter).
