Arsenal close to signing William Carvalho

Reports are coming in once again the Arsenal are closing in on signing Sporting Lisbon’s William Carvalho. The 22 year old was heavily linked with a move to the Gunners during the summer window but talks broke down between the two teams after Lisbon demanded £30 million plus for the player. But now with Carvalho being one of the few top International players available during the January window sports fans can bet on Wenger trying to push the deal through.

Arsenal are in need of a defensive midfielder with Wenger making it clear that he is looking for a long term replacement for Mathieu Flamini and Mikel Arteta. Carvalho can play both a defensive midfielder and a centre back position which are top priorities for Wenger this transfer window. Manchester United are also interested in the Lisbon midfielder and are ready to challenge Arsenal by putting down £24 million for the star player.

According to the Mirror, Carvalho told a Portuguese publication that his dream is to play in the Premiership – “My dream is to play in England. I know some clubs are interested but my agent Jorge is looking after it”. Sporting are ready to sell the youngster for £20 million, with many clubs showing an interest. However, Arsenal are closest to finalising the deal with the star’s agent confirming the possibility of a London-bound transfer in the next 2 weeks.

Carvalho is contracted at Sporting until 2018 but the contract features a £37 million buyout clause which was the main reason the Lions rejected Arsenal’s £15 million offer during the summer. Now that the player has openly expressed his desire to move to the English league there is hope in securing the player for £25 million.
