Song, Denilson and Cesc proves 3 into 2 does go

For those who think Adebayor couldn’t care less, I witnessed him run half the length of the pitch towards his own goal to close someone down after his team mate gave a loose pass

A merry afternoon to all you Gooners out there, especially the Gooners reading this of course.

I have that Arsenal winning spring in my step today, Monday morning is always a much happier place with another 3 points in the bag. Manchester City came to play and I suppose with the players they have they wouldn’t be able to park any sort of bus.

With three players coming back into the starting line up from long term injuries our first half was understandably patchy, some nice approach work without real menace to the City goal.

Cesc and Adebayor are two players who need each other, you could see that on Saturday. Cesc is a marvelous player no matter what but he needs others to show his full talent. Adebayor pulls away from defences and has the speed to get clear, this allows Cesc to show his full repertoire of through passes. Chipped, slide, floated he can do the lot. Adebayor’s second goal showed that. Not many in a very talented Arsenal squad could have made that pass look as easy as it did.

For those who think Adebayor couldn’t care less, I witnessed him run half the length of the pitch towards his own goal to close someone down after his team mate gave a loose pass. If we can have last seasons Adebayor back in the team from now on then I will be more than happy to have him spearhead the attack.

We didn’t create many first half chances but you need players to score from set pieces in that instance. We cannot always carve through sides with slick passing and having that option in the air is a massive Brucey.

So what of Cesc as the second striker, or attacking playmaker? Well I am still unsure of how that could pan out if it was to continue. He has the vision and passing to make it there but I am not sure if he is mobile enough in games where our passing isn’t coming off. His shooting isn’t his strongest point so I am not sure but if Wenger thinks it is the right move then I am talking a load of codswallop.

The stars of the show in my eyes was quite clear. Alex Song and Denilson ran the show from the first minute to the last. Many have said that Denilson’s positional sense is not good enough, well watch the game again and watch him track Shaun Wright-Phillips and make the cleanest slide tackle that you are likely to see after Clichy was beaten.

How about Alex Song only passing sideways? What about his outrageous back flick to Arshavin that allowed the Russian to get a shot in.

Kompany and De Jong couldn’t get near the ball all afternoon. Wenger has been talking about having a balance to our side well they certainly give us huge protection and allow the likes of Cesc, Arshavin, Nasri, Walcott to do their jobs.

One last point, Emmanuel Eboue. He was outstanding when he came on. I was sitting in the stand hoping that the ball would get out to Eboue. Every time he got possession he made City back pedal. If only he had composure in the final third, but I wonder if it is a little late for him to gain that due to his age, If he had that then he would be truly world class.

Moving away from the City clash for a moment but not quite moving away from Manchester. Is it me or was hearing from Sky and Match Of the day about the amount of injuries poor Manchester United are having to deal with? Excuse me! When we have half of our squad crocked from half a season it is not mentioned, hardly at all but anyone. But for one game Manchester United have a few players out (some due to suspensions because of ill discipline) everyone is talking about it.

I guess it only becomes an excuse when it is not us. I thought they had this wonderful strength in depth to be able to field 12 international teams or something? Aren’t we the team who are wafer thin? Sorry, I must have missed something.

I would go as far as to say we have a stronger deeper squad than Manchester United. We have stronger wide players, we have better depth in attack. Central midfield they are strong but we have players growing and improving.

Arsene Wenger is rightly putting contract and transfer talks to the back of his mind and concentrating on the short term.

Wenger said:

“My thinking is that we focus completely on the short term and not long term,” he said.

“We have such important targets in front of us that we have to show maturity and get rid of all the talks which are not helping us to win the games.

“We have to because we play every three days and we cannot sit around with players.

“It does not affect anything, because we can always talk to the agents, but I believe when a player comes back from an away game you do not want to be sitting around the desk at eight o’clock in the morning.

“You want him to recover, rest and prepare for the next game. We have taken this approach because we have a tight schedule. We know that every game is decisive for us.

“It is a period when you have to be completely in it to be successful. You cannot be half in and a little bit out, or 90 per cent and a bit out because you can miss that 10 per cent at an important moment of the game.

“I believe we have to be professional, to know what is important and when. That is why in the next month I do not want to talk about that (contracts).

He is spot on, we are going through the so called squeaky bum time we cannot be talking about Walcott or Van Persie contracts, we have to concentrate on our next game. The summer will be the time for all of that.

I wanted to talk about the game tomorrow but I have run out of time, I will of course have my thoughts and predictions tomorrow.

Enjoy your day.
