Size isn’t the only thing that matters, it is the motion in the ocean that is important. Having the natural determination to win a header, of knowing where to be at the right time is more important
I am back on the keyboard today. Over the weekend I had little time and not much to talk about so I decided to pass up the opportunity to waffle about pretty much nothing. So Monday afternoon has reached us and after a quiet weekend we have a big fat nothing to talk about.
I suppose you can class the Vermaelen speculation as something I guess, I guess that saying about something to do with flames and effects of those flames could well ring true in this case. The juicy rumour on the street is that we have agreed a fee with Ajax but the player has stalled over personnel terms or something like that.
If that was the case then you would expect Arsenal to be able to sort out a deal that he would accept after plying his trade in Holland which I can only assume without much knowledge that they would not pay that much compared to the English sides.
The Mirror has decided to run a negative on the player (yep, big surprise) Tony Adams spoke last week about his verdict on the player and that is being used as a stick to beat him with.
Big Tone said:
“Thomas is a very good player but I don’t think he’s ready for the Arsenal. I don’t think the punters at Arsenal would like another small one. I have been looking at the Dutch league, but it’s been decimated. It’s a poor league at the moment, there’s one or two players but they’re leaving too early as well.”
I have to admit that I was hoping for a towering, pacey, powerful, organiser but I trust Arsene’s judgement and hope that if true and completed brings something that our current team is lacking.
Size isn’t the only thing that matters, it is the motion in the ocean that is important. Having the natural determination to win a header, of knowing where to be at the right time is more important. Dennis Bergkamp was a big guy and was almost always out jumped. Having said all this, I do not know what type of defender he is so we will have to wait and see on that unless someone can fill in the blanks.
The player himself has been talking about us so it looks like it is more than likely that something is going on.
Vermaelen spoke to a Dutch newspaper and said:
“Moving to Arsenal is the right path for me. It is a great sporting challenge and I will also be financially better off. I think everything is going to be okay. In the coming days there will be more talks.”
England played on Saturday and although I have setanta I couldn’t be bothered to even turn the game on. There is something wrong there somewhere. I think I decided to wash up or something instead. You cannot blame me for not wanting to watch the likes of Terry, Lampard, Cole, Rooney and Gerrard together urgh, makes me slightly ill inside.
I didn’t get to watch Theo’s performance but from what I hear and read it wasn’t great. He hasn’t been on top of his game for a few weeks now but luck for him that his greatest strength does not require form, just fitness. With games and consistency Theo will always be a threat and he has an advantage over his international and club team mates because of his sheer pace.
For Arsenal I am not sure that the wing in a 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1 really gets the best out of him. I was at the Emirates for the Villarreal game and I started thinking to myself that when Theo is in his own half with his back to goal then he is probably our least important player in our squad, ok if you go into detail you could find flaws in that statement but he can’t be far off that in our first team but play the ball into his path or down the side of someone and he is the best.
I have a feeling that Wenger may tinker with the formation of the team to accommodate the stronger areas of the team. I do like 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1. We will get clues in pre season if Arsene does make a switch.
Arsene would have had to think long and hard about where he will make additions to the squad. As many will know, the ACN will remove a few important squad members for a few months including rest and getting back to match fitness but Wenger knows that he cannot buy a player for only a few months, he has to think about when the likes of Song, Eboue, Adebayor and Kolo Toure return, what happens to the excess of players we will have all wanting to play in the same positions. A couple of good signings along with a squad that is not completely depleted by injuries should be enough to get the squad through that period of the season.
Before I go, I would just like to ask all who leaves comments not to imitate others and just use your own usernames. With that I bid you goodbye, I am now Lee Marvin so its time for lunch.
Back tomorrow.
