Defence protection, Can Cesc score goals? & JET off

That is the one area that I wished Cesc was stronger. As an attacking midfielder the need to score goals is pretty high and unfortunately his shooting has never been in the same league as some of his rivals

Quick post today, wrote the match preview earlier, and there is not that much else going on right now.

Lets start the ball rolling with our manager who has had a few things to say ahead of the Celtic game.

Arsene has spoken about his need to stop his players conceding goals, which was a problem during last season.

“I wouldn’t like to come out too much on the tactical aspect of the game,”

“But we know that last year we conceded 37 goals and you cannot win the championship in England conceding 37 goals no matter how good you are going forward. That is something we have to address and correct compared to last year.”

I have always thought that man for man the members in our back four are as good as any other in the league but we did not appear organised enough at times. Not only that but we were not pressing opposition players the way we used to a few years back and that makes a massive difference over the course of a season.

When I watched Manchester United games that was the thing that instantly jumped out at you. Rooney and Tevez running like crazy to close the defenders down, then the midfield never stop working and that took so much pressure off Ferdinand and Vidic. We used to do it in 2007/08 so I don’t know what changed a year later.

Hopefully the Everton game was just the start. It was great to see players like Arshavin and Cesc making tackles just outside our own penalty area. Players like Song and Denilson will really add to the defensive side of our game and should allow the more creative players to do their work.

Creative players such as Cesc Fabregas, who Wenger feels will contribute more in the goal scoring department.

“I do not want to put too much pressure on him but he can score goals, He has improved his finishing, his power in finishing as well and he was always in interesting situations offensively but he could not always finish but he is now at an age where he can.

“He scored goals as a young boy so I can’t see why it won’t come back. It usually comes back at around 22, 23 years of age. He has more [license to get forward] but it depends as well on the structure of our team,”

“Sometimes when Abou Diaby plays Cesc is more defensive because Diaby is more an offensive support. So it depends, we adapt always and we try to find the right balance to the team.”

That is the one area that I wished Cesc was stronger. As an attacking midfielder the need to score goals is pretty high and unfortunately his shooting has never been in the same league as some of his rivals. He doesn’t seem to have the power in his shooting that others have. I think it is something you develop quite young but Cesc is still be able to score goals. He does appear to get into many good positions and he proved that he can get goals a couple of seasons ago.

His new role in the team allows him to get beyond the forward and no doubt he will get chances with the likes of Van Persie, Arshavin and Walcott.

Abou Diaby is a player I am looking forward to seeing in this formation, he certainly has a good shot on him and the stability behind him should see the best out of him. He needs to get over his injury problems and get a run of games together before we see that though.

Arsenal youngster Jay Emmanuel-Thomas has joined Blackpool on loan for a month which will be good for him as long as he gets some game time. I assume that it is only for a month so he is back for the Carling Cup.

So that is just about that. Enjoy the Celtic game and good luck to my beloved Gunners!
