Replacing Wenger the impossible mission / Walcott

The day that Wenger cuts his ties with our club will be a very sad day indeed. Any player can be replaced because it is he that finds these great players in the first place but finding a man like Wenger is going to be an impossible mission

A somewhat tired greeting to you this afternoon,

Feeling a little drained and flat today so I may have to keep this one short so I don’t collapse on the floor which would only make you feel guilty. No, I didn’t think so.

Arsene Wenger had his weekly press conference yesterday which always gives us something to nibble on. Can’t Wenger have a daily press conference instead? I would rather that, than look at bloody headlines about Chamakh or any of the daily dribble that comes out.

Anyway, Arsene confirmed that Theo Walcott and Andrey Arshavin are back in training, although the manager still seems a little cautious about the England flyer so I am pretty sure he will not start tomorrow but perhaps play a bigger part in the midweek Champions League match.

I shall talk more about the match in my usual match thoughts and predictions later on in the day.

Arsene Wenger is approaching his 60th birthday later on this month (still waiting for the invite to the big party) but he has no plans to retire which needless to say is great news. He was talking about his desire to stay in the game.

Wenger said:

“I don’t believe in retiring unless you have to, I have never had a day when I think I could live without football.”

“I know one day it will happen when I have to live without football but you shouldn’t live every day knowing you are going to die – you live knowing that you want to live.”

Without a doubt going the whole season unbeaten is my greatest achievement, If you win the championship you feel someone else can come in and do better than you. It was always my dream to go the whole season unbeaten because there’s not much more anyone can do to beat that. But this is an important year because we feel the team is now more mature and can compete at the top, top level.”

The day that Wenger cuts his ties with our club will be a very sad day indeed. Any player can be replaced because it is he that finds these great players in the first place but finding a man like Wenger is going to be an impossible mission.

We will probably be able to find great managers who can do certain parts of his job well, perhaps even better but finding a man who has the whole package, intelligence, long term thinking, morals and charisma of Wenger will not happen in my lifetime.

I think I’m going to cry *sniff* I am so pleased that he managed to create that invincible team, it was a thing of beauty, memories that I shall never forget and Gooners who were lucky enough to appreciate that time should never forget the man who was the brains behind it.

Arsenal of 2009 is a different to the 2004 version. We do not have as many players playing at their peaks as yet. The likes of Vieira, Pires, Ljungberg, Henry et al will never reach those highs ever again, you can be certain of that. Luckily for us we have many players who will reach that stage of their careers in the future so we can look forward to a healthy dose of Arsenal in the coming years.

Back to the present, Theo Walcott thinks that we do not have to look too far into the future to expect trophies.

Walcott said:

“I think the best thing is that we’ve kept players. If you keep a group of players it’ll hopefully establish us for the whole year winning trophies, I think this year we’ve had the experience of getting to the Champions League semi-final, and we’re just going to add one step further I think.

“Hopefully we’ve had the experience of that, so I’m sure we’ve got to bring something back for the fans because they’ve been very patient.”

Naturally I tend to agree with Mr Walcott. We have many fine players in our squad, although some Gooners tend not to agree with that assessment. Offensively I do not see another club as good as ourselves in this country but we certainly need to improve defensively collectively and individually. Should that not improve then we can probably kiss goodbye any hope of winning the league. We have the players at the back we just have to make it work.

Right must go for now, back later with some pre Fulham thoughts.
