Wenger as close to criticising his players as I’ve seen / Vela’s chance to shine?

I for one, am very excited about the prospect of Carlos Vela, who has extraordinary talent. He made an instant difference on Saturday and should have won us a penalty if the rules were not changed

Monday is here again and that lingering weekend defeat feeling is still hanging over my head and I guess many supporters heads around the world. For my money, it was yet another game in which we beat ourselves, we were in control of the game for a vast majority of the game and didn’t kill the game off so when I hear rubbish spouted from pundits about having a soft underbelly and all this crap it makes me so annoyed.

We were not bullied or outplayed we simply were not ruthless or forceful enough in the final third and yes that is very disappointing. I would go as far as to say we have only been outplayed once this season and that was our victory at Craven Cottage against Fulham.

I tell you what though, our manager was clearly not happy after the game, I haven’t seen him that angry for some time. It was a close as you would get to criticising his own players in public. He mentioned more than one occasion that certain players didn’t focus and prepare properly on the game.

Reading another interview via Sky Sports this morning Wenger still feels a little disappointed about his team.

Wenger said:

“Going forward we lacked sharpness, we lacked the desire to go behind defenders. We’ve chosen the easy part of the game and not exposed them with our pace in behind,”

“If you want to score goals you have to go behind the defenders. We choked a little bit and chose the easy part of the game. Mentally it’s a blow. It’s a big disappointment because we know it was a very important game that we couldn’t afford to lose and we perhaps under-estimated how difficult it would be for us here.

“Give Sunderland credit, they defended with a lot of heart and great desire and they fought for every ball. They played it like it was a cup tie. We had more of the ball so they tried to stop us from playing. Sometimes they were on the fringe of the rules but that’s part of the game.”

What Wenger said was pretty much how I felt during the game. We passed the ball in front of Sunderland without putting them under any pressure. It reminded me very much of many of our performances last season. Funnily enough one of those performances that stick out was our performance at the stadium of light last season.

The good news is that hopefully the team will get the message before the game tomorrow against Standard Liege and obviously on Sunday against Chelsea. One player who is likely to be involved with the game tomorrow is Carlos Vela. The Mexican has been very much on the fringes since he joined Arsenal but Wenger is willing to give the young talent a shot at making it at Arsenal. So much so that Wenger is willing to overlook Chamakh.

Wenger said:

“Vela is a fantastic talent and he is 20-years-old. We have invested a lot of time for him because we put him in Spain for two years, got him back and now we work with him every day.

“I believe he is a Robbie Fowler-type. He needs very little time to make a decision in the box. He is relaxed when he finishes and he has very short backlift. He is as well left-footed and he is a similar size.”

“At the moment I am inclined to say no “about going back for Chamakh) because I feel we have enough quality,”

I for one, am very excited about the prospect of Carlos Vela, who has extraordinary talent. He made an instant difference on Saturday and should have won us a penalty if the rules were not changed so that Arsenal can no longer receive penalties.

What I like about Vela is that he gives us unpredictability, he gives us pace and a wonderfully creative left foot finish. There is something very special about the chipped finish and he looks to be a master of that.

Good news about the potential new deals for Gallas and Rosicky, we need to keep all of our experienced heads in the squad. The likes of Jack Wilshere and co can really learn from Rosicky just as the likes of Johan Djourou and Thomas Vermaelen can learn from Gallas.

Right, must go. Slightly later than usual so apologies for that. Back tomorrow.
