Gazidis in the firing line, goalkeepers, injuries & Wenger new deal

One of the topics in yesterday’s blog came up about Arsene’s priority system for the four trophies. One guy in the audience suggested that we prioritise the FA Cup over the Champions League because it is easier to win

So that’s it, the season has officially ended. Well at least the league season. Fulham, Chelsea and Portsmouth still have something to look forward to. Good luck to Fulham in the final tomorrow, I wouldn’t be alone in saying that Roy Hodgson deserves his manager of the year award.

Even if Fulham have spent more than us in the last three years. Yeah I know I am getting a little obsessed with these figures.

I listened to the Q&A session with Ivan Gazidis on Arsenal.com and thought it was rather interesting.

Like I have said in the past, he comes across like a very sensible and likeable guy and he speaks very well. After having his say about where the club have gone in the last year on and off the pitch, the poor guy had to take Arsene’s bullets from disgruntled supporters.

The topic of goalkeepers was obviously at the front of many minds and questions were being asked of the coaching staff. Ivan Gazidis is not the manager so I felt a little sorry for him having to answer questions that are not his job. He did say that Arsene is not stupid and knows the areas of the team he needs to sort out.

One of the topics in yesterday’s blog came up about Arsene’s priority system for the four trophies. One guy in the audience suggested that we prioritise the FA Cup over the Champions League because it is easier to win. That is the difference between the Arsenal support and the club. As much as we all want silverware, Arsenal are a business, a sporting business but a business nevertheless.

The simple facts are that winning the FA Cup only brings in a total of £3.7 million which includes every round until winning in the final. It makes absolutely no business sense to prioritise that over the Champions League which can bring in over £34 million (amount varies on group draws and victories)

Chelsea received £16 million for winning the Premier League and we collected £14.4 million for our third placed finish.

Make no mistake, it is not only Arsenal who make these priorities. Manchester United have played the likes of Gibson, Welbeck etc in the FA Cup. It is not because it is not important, it is because they cannot play their strongest available team every single week through the whole season.

Arsene and the club want to win everything available but when our injury list is full to the brim and our FA Cup replay is smack bang in the middle of important Premier League games then something has to give. It would be strange to rotate for a league game whilst playing the strongest line up for the FA Cup.

Hopefully next season we will have more players available to use so this issue needn’t be one, an issue that is.

Which brings me nicely onto my next point. Ivan Gazidis was speaking about our injury problem and the many factors that could contribute to it. He threw out some statistics about our players having fewer days rest compared to our rivals and that we run more and have the ball more than other teams. These could all be factors that add up together to give us the worst injury record in the Premier League.

One of the measures taken is a new GPS system that will be used in the second half of the new season to detect the decline in distance covered and movement in training. The system is supposed to prevent injuries before they happen, which could work quite well.

I can see it now, uproar from the stands when Van Persie is placed on the bench after scoring a hat trick in his previous game.

However we do it, however it needs to be done, we need to find a solution to the problem, the problem that I believe has stopped us for winning a trophy in the last five years or so. I am not asking for a season with no injuries, that would be ridiculous. I just want Arsenal to be in line with the other clubs, at least our rivals.

Gazidis looks pretty certain that Arsene Wenger will sign a new deal, not only that but he gave the indication that it would be formalised pretty sharpish. Apart from Gallas seeking pastures new, I think the management team have done a good job in keeping the group together, which includes Cesc Fabregas.

Guillem Balague said after Barcelona’s recent 3-2 victory over Sevilla that he expected Cesc and David Villa to join Barcelona in the next few weeks. I also expect Guillem Balague to chat complete and utter tosh. The difference is, I am correct.

Robin Van Persie is looking forward to the arrival of Marouane Chamakh, stating that he had only watched him on television. Are you telling me that you haven’t even bothered yourself with YouTube yet Robin?

Well done to the Arsenal under 18’s who disposed of Nottingham Forest to retain the Premier Academy League Trophy.

Back again tomorrow.
