Good evening,
I am loving the feeling around Gooner world at the moment. Arsenal fans seem to be developing a nice little siege mentality after recent events. I have read a few rants from Gooners regarding the treatment from most media outlets and the hypocrisy that we as supporters have had to deal with for many a year now.
Finally it seems that instead of supporters slagging off Denilson playing side ways passes, We are supporting the team together and surely as supporters of this great club, this is exactly the point of our existence. At least in footballing terms.
Arsene Wenger’s responding to a reporter about Cesc being subject of a witch hunt has hit the head lines today which is rather unsurprising. Let’s not forget that it was the reporter that suggested this and not our manager.
I have noticed the hostility towards Cesc for a good few months now and the difference between him and others seems pretty damn clear but if this can galvanise the team and support then long may that continue. The Emirates was utterly rocking on Tuesday, and I wonder if the result would have turned out the same if it was the quiet, agitated and impatient crowd as often found at 3pm in North London, we will never know but I am sure the atmosphere helped a great deal.
I cannot be at all bothered to get into the whole David Moyes recent comments, I really cannot. Talking absolute tosh about something that players do on a weekly basis. Apparently he actually really thinks that Cesc believes that Everton paid the referee. For gods sake.
With all the nonsense about handshaking after matches, having a drink with an opposition manager who has spent 90 minutes shouting insults at you. I thought it was only the foreign managers who do not stick to these fine traditions. Now all of a sudden poor Moyes is so upset about Cesc’s comments that he has to blab about it to the whole world and their dogs. You know what route the media would have taken if Wenger had said that ‘British’ manager had said something in the tunnel.
I couldn’t believe my eyes yesterday, I read an article in the Independent called It’s football that’s gone nutty, not the Professor.
I was a little shaken up after I had finished reading it. I thought I had entered the twilight zone or something of the sort. If you haven’t read it yet then I suggest you do just make sure you are sitting down whilst reading. Unfortunately facts in articles are rare and whilst the Cesc stuff is nonsense, I would gladly take 50% of informative facts instead of peddling the same rubbish that others spew on a daily basis.
So the rumour of Fabianski being out for the season has turned out true, it is very unfortunate for him as he was literally in the form of his life. It does open the door for Wojciech Szczesny to claim the number one jersey as his own. It has been a big turn around for the young Pole. It was only in September that Szczesny was saying that Wenger was avoiding him in training and vented about being left out of the Carling cup squad. Well it shows what happens when you keep working hard and wait for your chance. Last season Szczesny was behind Almunia, Fabianski and Mannone and now he is top of the tree and can probably keep that position if he continues to improve his performance.
He is lucky because he has a good defence ahead of him, a defence who haven’t conceded an onside Premier league goal in the year 2011. One of those individuals goes by the name of Laurent Koscielny who has earned a French call up for his quality performances in the red and white. I take it that Laurent Blanc does not follow Alan Hansen and the British media, otherwise they would have been told that he was not very good. At least that is what Hansen muttered at half time against Ipswich at the Emirates.
I am very pleased for Koscielny, a player that I have taken under my wing as one of my favourite players since watching his display in the first Emirates cup game. He has obviously had to adapt to the English game and he has made a few mistakes along the way, but he is finding his feet superbly and has developed a superb relationship with Johan Djourou.
Usually I do not want our players to be anywhere near the International scene, especially in the midst of a difficult season but as a player who has yet to be capped, it can surely only do him good. Unless of course he gets RVP’d, and that would be bad news.
It looks as if opinions of our two new French defenders are going in opposite directions. Squillaci was seen as the calm and experienced head whilst Koscielny was being made to look like a rabbit in the headlights, the new Cygan he was being called in some quarters. Well he is proving people wrong and I will smack down a bet that his number 6 shirt will be fully justified in no time.
I like many Gooners are intrigued to know what happens to our defence once a certain Thomas Vermaelen comes back fit and ready to go. How do you drop a partnership who are working so well together and have been the platform for the rest of the team to build on? Ok, perhaps we need to just get Vermaelen back before we speak about that. Apparently he is three weeks or so away. He is free from injury at the moment and is running and taking part in training but the only thing missing is fitness and sharpness.
Goalkeeping and defensive crisis? do me a favour love!
With Alex Song not being able to shake off his thigh problem in time for the trip to the Geordies, I wonder what Arsene’s pecking order is like right now?
As we now play with two deeper midfielders, the absence of Alex is no longer as important I would say. Jack ‘the boy’ Wilshere is likely to add his energy and bite but then who will Wenger call to partner him with? Denilson is back from injury (I think) whilst Abou Diaby came through some more valuable minutes against Everton on Tuesday.
Perhaps Abou’s physical advantage will give him the nod. Diaby will probably have to rein in his attacking instincts but I remember he was doing just that when fit last season. When he was fit and had games under his belt, he developed a great partnership with Alex Song and I really think that was understated. They dominated so many games when we were doing well.
I would love to see us get a healthy advantage in a game then replace Cesc with probably Diaby. A trio of Song, Diaby and Wilshere would be very tough defensively for the opposition. That would be fun to watch.
Perhaps when we score our fourth in our 5-0 home win against Barcelona we can see that midfield take shape late on to keep Cesc fresh.
Well one can dream can’t one?
Back tomorrow for a pre match article.
