Ju Young Park had become somewhat of a forgotten man before the recent victory against Bolton in the Carling cup. Park was signed within days of the transfer window closing and was subsequently not given any pitch time in the following match day squads.

Many Arsenal supporters had wondered why the forward was not making any appearances when at times the team needed goals especially at White Hart Lane when Per Mertesacker pushed forward in the closing stages while Park continued to warm the substitutes bench.

Park was given a start in the Carling cup against lowly Shrewsbury Town but he failed to impress, struggling with the pace of the game and in Wenger’s words ‘inhibited’

Rumours were floating around that Park had started to look impressive in training and when it came to the next round of the Carling cup against Bolton, Park showed his quality with some neat touches and an exquisite second half finish to win the game.

Arsene Wenger speaking to Arsenal Player spoke about the quality of his new forward and as Jessie J would say. it’s not all about the money.

He personally needed that [the goal scored against Bolton] but I believe that when a new player arrives to a club you need that as well to convince people that you have the quality to be where you are.

If his transfer [fee] was massive and he scores the goal he scores everybody would be full of what he achieved, so let him show that he has the level to be at Arsenal football club and the goal will help him to gain confidence.

Wenger then explained that it was not only Park that needed time to adjust. A little known French striker needed even more time than Park.

Park arrived on the 31st August, we are today end of October, that’s two months. Thierry Henry started to play in November, and arrived earlier.

It takes some time to settle, he is a quality player and we see that in training and he is a very intelligent player, that came out in the game. So overall I believe you will see more and more of Park.

I think many of us have become a little too accustomed to players like Sagna, Vermaelen, Arshavin, Arteta and company hitting the ground running and we forget about those who have needed the adaptation period, started slowly and then showed their worth over the longer term. In recent history I think of someone like Eduardo who looked painfully off the pace when he first joined the club and then exploded onto the scene with those ice cool left foot placed shots into the corner of goalkeepers nets. I am hoping that we can have a similar impact from Ju Park.

He is yet to make his Premier league debut, let alone Premier league goal. A goal tomorrow off the bench would be a good place to start.
