I may go to my doctor and see if he will write me a note that I can send to Arsenal FC. One that demands victory on a weekly basis because of the feeling it gives you. It is Monday and I woke up to a thundering alarm this morning, I could barely open my eyes but a few minutes later as I sat in my kitchen sipping a hot cup of coffee, memories of Arteta’s side footed finish had much more of a kick than the caffeine filled drink that was swimming around my system.
If I could bottle up a post victory feeling tablet then the anti depressant drug companies would be out of business and I would be a rich man. My giddiness has been tempered somewhat due to yet another one of those irritating and unnecessary international periods.
I have been struggling to deal with this one I must say. Too many thoughts racing around my mind. Robin van Persie has been seriously hurt in these games in the past and given his form, that just cannot happen. But because we all don’t want it to happen so desperately, it will be just our luck that it happens again but at the same time, because this has happened before so frequently, surely the law of averages is on our side and while we are all shaking behind our sofa’s van Persie will jog back to his dressing room post game without a scratch on him. Perhaps that is just what I am telling myself to make me feel a little better, I just don’t know.
I’d rather he was pinging free kicks into the top corner at London Colny with Mikel Arteta but that just isn’t going to happen. After this article I shall send an email to the footballing gods and inform them that the likes of Tottenham, Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City are long overdue a visit from the injury gods rather than our good selves.
Ok, enough waffle for a moment and let me get onto a topic that I said that I would avoid for a while but a subject that gets everyone running around like teenage girls at a Justin Bieber concert.
The January transfer window.
Has anyone heard of the names Mario Götze (I’ve even got the fancy dots above the ‘o’) or Eden Hazard? Yeah well I thought you may. Those are two names that have been thrown our way for the last year or more in Hazard’s case. Two highly talented creative players with huge potential and two players that have many of the big clubs around the world pushing and shoving in the queue to get to the front when the doors open on January 1st.
Both players tick many an Arsene box, technically amazing, match winners, assisters and goal scorers and young with plenty of scope for improvement. During the summer window I was one of the shrieking fans, lying awake at night desperately refreshing newsnow on my phone for a sniff of a chance that one of these players were on the plane to London to.. what do they call it these days? ‘thrash out a deal.’ Yeah that’s the one.
As we know, it didn’t happen and apart from Gervinho and a few experienced players like Mikel Arteta we basically had to make do with what we already had at the club. With Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri departing for sunnier climates and greener pockets respectively, I thought we really needed one superstar to add to the quality youngsters and experienced heads brought in during a busy off season.
a large slice of the creative burden was left to Aaron Ramsey who was still feeling his way back after being well and truly Shawcrossed. As you would expect, he was inconsistent, off the pace at times and struggled to stamp his authority on games. I try and be patient when it comes to our players, try and look at the bigger picture but I struggled to see how Ramsey would fill that position this season. What the hell do I know?
As the weeks have ticked by, Ramsey has gone from strenz to strenz, he is looking dynamic and inventive in the final third. He has found his mojo again as well as this new team beginning to click and understand each other so I am guessing that Aaron Ramsey’s progress will continue to go north.
I thought I would gather some midfield stats together so far this season from our boys, and the super Mario with the dots above his ‘o’

The first thing to point out is that Alex Song and Mikel Arteta for the most part spend a larger percentage of time in deeper positions than Ramsey although it is their job to swap positions during the game. So can people please stop saying stuff like ‘I wish Song would do his job and sit back’ or ‘he think’s he is Messi’ that gets my goat. His job is to rotate with his two other midfield partners and make it difficult for the opposition to pick our midfield up.
Mario Gotze has often played in a wide attacking position which could explain his better goal statistics. That said Gotze has contributed to eight goals in ten games when he has been on the pitch. Four assists and four goals, impressive work.
Aaron Ramsey has an equal number of assists from the same amount of games played although this does not tell me how many minutes each player has played in each game. Although Ramsey only has one league goal to his name, he certainly is not afraid to let fly and boasts 19 shots from the ten games. Ramsey has had four more shots than Gervinho who is an attacker.
Speaking of attackers, we look at the statistics of Eden Hazard from his league games for Lille so far this season.

The same number of goals as Gotze and tops the assists with five. It looks as if he has the touch of the Ronaldo about him with his high number of strikes at goal. 30 shots from 13 games.
However Gervinho’s stats look rather impressive on paper. Having missed three games thanks to a mixture of Joey Barton an idiot referee and a silly slap, the Ivorian has only managed to play eight league games so far but in that time he has racked up five assists in that time. That is a cool 0.6 assists per game. When you look over at the other flank and see that Theo only has one assist in eleven games then it shows just how impressive his figures are. I am now beginning to think that Gervinho purposefully missed at Stamford Bridge just to obscure Walcott’s stats a little further.
I wouldn’t say there was a huge difference in the quality of our two wide players delivery but Gervinho’s ability to get around his full back looks like it could well be giving him a massive advantage. Mr Hazard would have little problem in doing that as his strength is dribbling.
So putting the folder of stats away in the draw for a moment and let us get back down to earth. Mario Gotze has stated how happy he is playing for his club and his club do not have to sell for any financial reasons. Not only that but if Aaron Ramsey continues to improve his game, continues to rack up assists and his goals start coming because, I really believe that Ramsey will be a prolific scorer in time, then what do we do come January? I would imagine that we would have to break our transfer record by double and then have a player who has never set foot in a Premier League game and a player that would have to adjust to a new country as well as club. Not only that but there is a small matter of a wee lad called Jack Wilshere who has already ticked the boxes that Mario hasn’t.
I am not for one moment suggesting that I wouldn’t want a player of Gotze’s quality at Arsenal. Far from it, I was in awe when he carved us apart in Dortmund, the first real time I got to see what he was about. I fantasised for days about Gotze being the Cesc replacement that we so needed at the start of the season when Robin spent games isolated in attack without much of a link. His style suits Arsenal perfectly but from a managers point of view, is it feasible? Can Ramsey, Wilshere and Gotze all play without anyone killing the other?
In the words of Kevin Keegan, I would luv it, but sadly I cannot see it happening on many levels. So to Eden Hazard, the fact that he has publicly stated that he is seeking pastures new means that the chance of joining Arsenal is indeed higher than the German signing for us. But as mentioned earlier in the article, there will be many a club waiting to ‘double what Arsenal will pay’
Chelsea and Real Madrid have been linked with the mercurial wizard while Barcelona have also sniffed around the Belgian international. He will not be going cheaply that is for sure but there are two faces at the club who will have their arms up in the air, asking ‘why never me?’
Ryo Miyachi and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have not had the chance to show that they could be as good as Hazard or at least close to that level. The only way they can show that is to have a run of games. Arsene has promised that both of them will be big players for Arsenal after the second half of the season.
I don’t want to destroy any bedtime dreams that Gooners may have but I just do not see any of those players in an Arsenal shirt come the close of the January window.
Interesting to see that Jack Wilshere only managed three assists in his 35 games last season and only one goal. Alex Song has already equalled that after only playing eight games. Impressive stuff. Jack has plenty more to offer going forward and I cannot wait until he is back, fit and showing us his improvement.
Speaking of Jack, I loved his comments about wanting to be at the club for the rest of his career. It just shows his commitment and also how much he loves this club. I try not to cling onto footballers words too much though especially of one who is still very young but it is great that his heart is in the right place.
Another person showing the love was Marco van Basten.
“Robin must not leave Arsenal. You can’t compare my situation at Ajax. The big difference is that Robin is already at a big club. Robin has been in London for six years. He can’t help it that Arsenal have won nothing in that time.
“So much has changed in those six years in the Premier League. Chelsea have become a big club and have massive financial resources. Manchester City have become a big force and are richer than any other club. The amount of money which is flowing to these clubs for transfers is unbelievable. Arsenal operate differently. I admire that.”
“I still think Arsenal are the most beautiful club in England. At Man City and Chelsea, they will never have that class and style. Arsenal have the most amazing stadium, they have a style of play, they have a beautiful shirt – in every way I consider Arsenal as the ultimate football club. It is the club where Robin belongs.”
“Do I sound like an idealist? Maybe I do, but all those things Arsenal have to offer can play a part in the decision to stay there. The foundations are there.”
Now that is what I am talking about. Marco, I would like to officially announce that I love you. I hope you’re ok with that. Sounds like more of an Arsenal supporter than a few that I have heard over the years.
Being a Dutch legend and all, I think van Persie needs to be respectful and listen to what the guy is saying. I mean, it would be rude not to.
How fit is van Basten today? With comments like those I think Arsene should offer the guy a year contract and roll back the years. I kid, I kid. You have to write that these days because someone out there will think I am serious and argue with how stupid I am, which would be fair enough but just not when I am pulling yer leg.
Right, it is time for lunch. Enjoy your Arsenal warm day.
Back tomorrow.
