Bayern Munich (h) Thoughts & Line Up: Backs to the wall performance please

In terms of team selection, it looks as if the team pretty much picks itself. The likes of Tomas Rosicky, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Francis Coquelin are unlikely to start, while Nancho Monreal is tied up to a cup or something so it means that we have no natural left backs at the ready. Thomas

All you need after a bad result is a poor team at home to regain some of your confidence so tonight’s game should be just perfect. Of course I jest, we face arguably the form team in Europe, not that I know that or anything but it sounds good. If we lose then run as fast as you can away from the stadium because all hell will break loose. Maybe you can run as fast as one of the horses and get some Cheltenham odds

What cannot be doubted is the fact that the German team are flying at present, coasting clear of a quality looking Dortmund side and have all but wrapped up their domestic league already. They have only conceded 7 goals all league season which quite frankly, is ridiculous.

Bayern Munich are the clear favorites tonight and I love that. The manager is under fire, the players have been rubbished left right and center so the pressure has been lifted to some degree, but it is the Arsenal way to come out swinging when our backs are against the wall. When we are the underdog we often pull out a performance and that is what I expect from the players tonight. At least that is what I hope to see.

It seems to be a regular occurrence under Arsene Wenger and not just recent teams either. Teams of old would go to Old Trafford and raise their game and win when it wasn’t expected. We were written off at Real Madrid in 2006 and played them off the park, it was the same against AC Milan in 2008.

I am hoping that the same will happen once more tonight. I said last night that I thought Wengerball had let us down against Blackburn Rovers on the weekend, this is an evening where I hope it benefits us. Where the players are able to express themselves against the best.

We have to find the rather difficult balance between playing a high tempo, all action game because we are playing at home but we also must remember that the game will be played over at least 180 minutes so over committing ourselves and being picked off would be football suicide.

What we need is the type of 45 minutes that we put in last season against AC Milan at the Emirates but we need to do it for the full 90 minutes, that said, Bayern are a different level to that Milan side so keeping the ball will not be as easy as it was that night.

Thomas Vermaelen will shift across and patch up that area while the doubtful Laurent Koscielny will probably be fit enough to start the game.

Mean Lean’s Predicted Line Up:

Szczesny

Sagna Mertesacker Koscielny Vermaelen

Arteta Cazorla

Walcott Wilshere Podolski

Giroud

Arsene may feel that the above team is too offensive and might go a controlling team instead, adding an extra midfielder in Diaby and replacing one of the three forward players.

However we set up, it will be a really tough match and it will be interesting to see how we fair against one of the best sides in world football at present. It should make for an exciting game of football.

Like I’ve said, it would be so Arsenal to lose against Blackburn and then beat Bayern Munich, let us go for it and see where it takes us.
