Not the 3 points I wanted & Rivals causing me pain

If you are one that was bemoaning our lack of attacking intent on Saturday, let me ask you this. Picture the scenario. Arsenal 1 Wigan 0 79 minutes played. Lukas Podolski is back to goal with the ball at his feet, looking for a passing option, he cannot twist away from his markers to find a midfielder but look who comes bombing up the pitch down the left, it’s Nacho man!!! Sprinting into the left wing position, Podolski finds him and his cross is headed out, Wigan play it down their right into the space vacated by Monreal who in search of the 2nd goal has left Arsenal short at the back, Koscielny spotting the gap trots over to plug in that space but the right wingers cross has found Kone in space in the box, bang! 1-1.

Not only do we have Arsenal games to contend with, dealing with those emotions is difficult enough but I was ‘watching’ the Man U vs Chelsea game on an app, not watching as such just catching up with the score and the minute whilst tucking into some nasty burger from McDonalds, there I was refreshing my phone as the 90 minutes approached, wishing the time by so I could throw my phone into my pocket and get back to the family. It was at Old Trafford, surely nothing could go wrong now, if Chelsea were going to take advantage of Ferguson’s mix and match side then they would have done so already. Bang! 0-1 flashed up on my phone.

You know when a goal is scored against Arsenal and for that split second, you are in some strange world where you are expecting the goal to be ruled out? well I experienced that whilst glaring at my phone. It was a mistake, my phone has gone all funky for a moment and everything will be ok. Until reality bites, and for a game that did not involve Arsenal, it bloody hurt. This pain was made even worse having to deal with Gareth Bale bailing those lot out once again even though they should have been losing by that point.

I have had a rather horrible feeling that Tottenham will win at Stamford Bridge for a few weeks now, I can’t shake that off but I always had the comfort that Chelsea not grabbing all three points at Old Trafford was very possible until it happened. I still haven’t seen the highlights or indeed the goal. I don’t know what happened with David Luiz or anything like that, I couldn’t bring myself to read about it.

In some ways I would rather Tottenham faced a lesser side at home so the pressure could fall right back on their shoulders but there is something about a team going away from home against a strong side needing nothing but victory. But hey, I worry too much about these things, I just cannot help myself.

I still have a greedy eye out for third place, so I think I want a draw from that game, Chelsea scoring first would be nice though.

Speaking of scoring first, it has been nice watching Arsenal grab the first goal in most of our recent victories, we are defending well as a team so we are now able to hold onto these leads, even if at times we have rode our luck.

It has been a little strange reading the complaints about our performances. I would rather we made it easier for ourselves by scoring a few more goals in every game but when the final whistle blew at Craven Cottage or at Loftus Road, I couldn’t give a Gareth Bale about how we achieved those points.

I read about how Arsene needs to make changes to the team, drop x, bring in y move z to the left etc. Totally ignoring the fact that the current team have drawn two and won the rest since the defeat to Tottenham.

It kinda feels like moaning for moaning sake and basically whatever result and score Arsenal make, you will find someone to complain about it.

Example 1: QPR 1 Arsenal 3

Complaint: Glad we got the win but what on earth were we doing for their goal? If we can’t keep a clean sheet against this mob then we do not deserve to be in the top 4

Example 2: QPR 3 Arsenal 6

Complaint: Arsene does not teach defence, why can’t we keep it tight and grind out results like Manchester United? We have the 4th highest wage bill and my season ticket is one of the highest in Europe so I would expect us to be able to defend much better as a team.

Example 3: QPR 0 Arsenal 1

Complaint: Why did we not push on and score more goals? Why are we trying to defend an early lead? If QPR created more and better chances and then took them while we didn’t take our chance then we could have drawn or lost this one.

Example 4: QPR 0 Arsenal 5

Complaint: Well done for getting the three points but it is a little late doing it now. We should be beating them like this and should have done this against Everton and Tottenham so we wouldn’t be in this mess. Insanity is quoting the same thing over and over again and expecting people not to find this ironic

I reckon I could go on like that for a while, showing how very unhappy I am at the way we achieved another three points, because it is not the type of three points that I wanted.

I am guessing that the plan is not to scrap for points in the long term, I reckon the race for a top four place is making the players play within themselves, especially when we manage to go a goal up. There is a huge amount of pressure on the teams to win games so sparkling, champagne football is unlikely to be on the menu at Arsenal, Tottenham or Chelsea. Look at Tottenham vs Southampton for more evidence.

When the season finishes then I expect the attacking flair and sparkle to be worked on once more and more risks will be taken.
