I am painfully tired this morning as I had to wake up especially early to take the eldest mini Lean to her school before she and her year set on their merry way to the Isle of Wight for the week. I actually remember also going to the same destination at that age with my school, those were the days.
The reason why I am so tired today is because of the unearthly hour that the Spain vs Uruguay game ended. Well given that I started the match an hour after the kick off didn’t help. However it was a mighty fine game of football.
The Spanish as ever were impressive and played the typical way that Spain play. It is easy to admire their possession ability at such speed and in tight areas but what continues to strike me as to how they manage to prevent International sides at such a high level from stringing four passes together. They make a team like Uruguay look like Stoke City, forced into pumping it long because they have three or four Spanish players tearing after them.
It is easy for any football fan to say, ‘hey, why do we not press like they do?’ but it is not as easy as that. Not only is the actual pressing synchronised and well rehearsed but you can only play that way if you simply do not lose the ball. After expending so much energy to win the ball back they can take a breather by pinging the ball around in triangles as ridiculous speeds.
I really would have liked to have seen Barcelona of a few season’s ago deal with Dortmund’s pressing game. I’ve never really seen Barcelona really being pushed into mistakes when on the ball.
Back to the Spanish game, Cesc Fabregas rolled back the years to his Arsenal days, playing in his old position behind the front man, he made a goal for his strike partner with a delicious reverse pass, reminiscent of his switch to Ljungberg at White Hart Lane a number of years ago.
We have missed that in recent years and I do wonder if Arsene will look to bring in someone who can do what Cesc Fabregas can do. Make runs into the box, score goals and find the killer pass.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the end of season team was our template going forward. While many are urging the manager to bring Santi back into a central role, I think Arsene likes the balance of having another creative player out in the wide position as well as a number 10.
David Ornstein of the BBC seems to think we will be after a creative midfielder and if I was to believe one journalist it would be him. Well I say believe but I really mean not making stuff up, rather given certain bits of info from the club which is better than complete made up nonsense.
Ornstein also said that Higuain is our number one target, if that was given from the club then you can be sure that negotiations are underway or if you want to be optimistic then all could be done. Then again, it could be nonsense like 99% of the stories floating around.
The idea of a super creative talent like Cesc along with excellent movement and finishing of a player like Higuain on top of our end of season organisation and work rate could possibly catapult us towards the top of the table. I am convinced that Arsene is looking towards that, perhaps not those players but that style. I could be wrong but given our lack of creativity for spells last season, it would make sense.
It would be interesting to see how we played with a striker like Higuain in terms of our build up play because it would be very different to Giroud, anyway I am jumping ahead of myself here.
So what of Koscielny going to Barcelona? Haha nonsense. I did say over a year ago though that I thought Barcelona would love a player like Koscielny. They can want him all they like, this is post commercial deals Arsenal, there is no reason why we should be letting go of our best players who are under contract.
It is all very quiet on Arsenal.com but let us remember that we do not announce anything until all paper work and photos, interviews etc have been done. We’ve seen that in previous seasons when we all knew that a deal had been done but had to wait days even weeks until it was confirmed. My point is that just because it is quiet, doesn’t mean that nothing is happening.
I should be putting up a readers article this evening at some point via the Your Vision section, keep an eye out for that. If you want to have your view published then check out that section and submit your stuff.
’till then.
