Is the Bernard to AFC real? & The difference between summer 2012 & 2013

We are being linked with Brazilian wonderkid Bernard and I think we should be signing him for his name itself. I gets the feeling that there is something in this. It follows a familiar pattern of an Arsenal signing. Being linked with many players in the press for a while, usually really obvious names like Scott Dann or Chris Samba. But then whispers to come out from a source in that players country that a deal is close. Arsene then twists the question about the interest. Like ‘that report is not

Happy Tuesday to you, well I would be happier if I was not waiting at my train platform in my shorts and T-shirt watching the rain thundering down all around me. Maybe a quick glance at the weather forecast in the morning would be useful.

So what is happening in the world of Arsenal today? Firstly there is crazy talk about a £41m bid coming from us to Liverpool for a player who likes to fall over and bite people. A good player but over £40m? That just seems ridiculous and especially for us. Chelsea and Manchester City have a habit of over paying for players, well because they can but really cannot imagine that we would pay that.

Anyway, I did have a quiet word with myself that I wouldn’t talk too much about Suarez until something more substantial came about.

But then whispers come out from a source in that players country that a deal is close. Arsene then twists the question about the interest. Like ‘that report is not accurate’ or ‘we have not signed this player’ that doesn’t mean that we will not be signing said player.

I haven’t seen anything of the little wee lad until I saw him come on for Brazil at the Confederations Cup my first impression of his first touch was ‘wow, looks a talent’ I can’t actually remember what he did but I remember chuckling at his name.

The player himself said that his future depends on what his club do which says to me that no deal has been made between any interested parties. If Arsene is interested then it looks to be a replacement for Gervinho who clearly looks like heading out of the door.

It is the type of player I thought Arsene would like, a young gifted talent but in the higher price bracket. A bracket that he would not have been able to reach when the post Highbury youth policy came about.

Anyway on Bernie, I like most have only had YouTube to work with. Unfortunately I cannot find any all game touches which are a far better way of trying to get an idea of what a player is like rather than a video of them just scoring random goals. That said, he looks like a very good dribbler but unlike the man who he may replace, he looks to have end product. But like I said, I haven’t seen the crosses he has missed or the shots he scuffed.

Anyway, we have been down the road of player heading to Arsenal for it all to go south and fast, so I think it is another case of let us wait and see what happens, if anything. Especially considering that there was a rumour that the story was fake. That is what it has come to, rumours of stories being fake, too many layers for my liking.

Which brings me nicely onto my main topic of today. I was having a conversation with someone on Twitter about our lack of signings thus far. He said that bringing in new players late would mean that we would be out of the title race in October. The rational behind this argument is that last season our players had to settle in and adapt to our way of playing and also trying to acclimatise to Premier League football.

I would agree with a chunk of that from last season but I totally disagree that it is the same this time around. Firstly we had to shift from playing through one bloke, the three players bought to replace him had to settle, establish partnerships. Another huge shift was the way we played, with Steve Bould’s influence we defended completely differently and that impacted our offensive game. We changed our style of play a few times until the season ended but at the end of the season we found a strong stability that allowed us to go on a long unbeaten run which pushed us into the CL places when it looked impossible before hand.

The Arsenal team of July 2013 is not the same team as the July 2012 version. For a start we didn’t have Santi Cazorla until August and he is another example of a player not needing to turn up in June before making an impact. An instant impact at that.

The foundations of the team are far more difficult to establish, finding the right balance and chemistry can take months. After our run of form last season I am convinced that we have found that and that the players we have are all improving.

So while it is an obvious advantage to get players in as soon as possible, it is far more important that we buy the right players before the window closes. Like Santi in August rather than Sigurdsson in June for example.

We have a choice, panic now or wait until the window closes then we can panic or realise that panicking was unnecessary.

I know what I’d rather do. Let us not forget that you can get More Arsenal Talk Here
