Marseille (h) – Expecting Jack’s upward curve, Inventive Ramsey & Winning Group

Going back to Ramsey for a moment, you can see why Arsene played him as the number 10 when Cesc left and we failed to get Cazorla. His pass to Theo Walcott this pre season against Manchester City, one amazing pass to the same player I think away at Olympiacos when he was younger along with a few to Özil already this season. He has concentrated so much on his remarkable run of goals

I expected us to get the needed three points last night against a Marseille side that had nothing to play for but I didn’t expect it to be as one sided as it turned out, it was a training session against a lower league side who were there to help Arsenal work on their drills, well at least that is how the game felt.

The first 30 seconds were a speedy roller coaster of emotions, the away side had pressed us from kick off and won the ball back immediately just as I was thinking oh dear, we had won it back and scored. It took me a second or two to register what had just happened.

Wilshere’s check inside and strange scooped chip into the far corner was fantastic yet unusual in it’s execution. Jack Wilshere was our best attacking player on the night, in fact he was my man of the match even without his two goals. In the last two games Jack Wilshere has started to get that sharpness back, he didn’t just look like having a good game, he looked like he was finding his feet again. A little like how Ramsey looked at the end of last season. Jack Wilshere now needs to put the niggles behind him and stay fit.

It will be interesting to see what Arsene does because going by the managers past behaviour, he will shoehorn Jack into the side. Wilshere has been selected over Rosicky for a while now even when the senior player was the better option. I believe it is because Arsene expects a big upcurve from him just as he got with Ramsey. The only way to draw that out is by playing him consistently. With Walcott, Podolski and all our central midfielders competing for places, Arsene will have to drop someone who he really will not want to.

Before his ankle issues in recent months he played a match on the right, I cannot remember which game it was and I liked the look of him in that position, he was fantastic in that role last night. Darting inside his man and linking up with his team mates. He could have had an assist from the right when he squared to Ramsey inside the box but Steve Mandanda produced a world class save, I am not sure much blame can be pointed in the direction of the Welshman even from that range.

Both young midfielders on the night stole the show and Mesut Özil did not need to be at his best. Özil gave away a few passes that he usually plays with his eyes closed. His miscontrol after a delightful Ramsey scoop was so uncharacteristic. Aaron Ramsey was demonstrating another side of his huge bow. We’ve seen the tackling from last season, the goals this season along with his ever present non stop running. Last night Rambo was the most inventive player on the pitch. His scoops over the French defence were weighted to perfection, his flick to win the penalty was that of a £42m player and not a £4.5m purchase from Cardiff. It should have been a free kick but the decision was given in our favour.

I knew Özil was going to miss as soon as he stood over the ball. He had misplaced a few passes prior to the award of the penalty and his non run up just felt wrong. Mandanda guessed correctly and palmed away to safety.

Given that Özil is not a goal scorer, it is somewhat of a surprise that he is second in command to take the spot kicks. Especially so given that Giroud scored from one on the weekend.

I was pleased with Özil’s response to missing though. Instead of going through the motions until being replaced, he injected some more tempo in his game and visibly looked more hungry to right his wrong.

He has concentrated so much on his remarkable run of goals that his creative passing seems to have been put on hold. I’d love to see some more of that rather than his shoot on sight strategy which of course, has worked pretty well until now.

It was Ramsey again who slotted Özil in the penalty area in the second half and Özil’s square pass found Wilshere unmarked to cooly slot in the second and the winner. I am enjoying watching the midfielders getting themselves into the box now, something we have failed to do in years gone by.

We should have scored a lot more goals and that does not even include the penalty. We were pretty wasteful in the final third but that is what happens when you have an attack full of creative midfield players. With Podolski and Walcott we may have finished Marseille off a lot earlier.

Nacho Monreal deserves credit for replacing the ill Gibbs and looking so sharp. A player of his quality really does deserve more game time. Perhaps on Thursdays when Spurs are playing he could spend some time with Santi and work on his right foot so he could be Sagna’s deputy as well.

Szczesny made one outstanding save to deny Thauvin which is a shame for Andy Townsend apparently. Koscielny has quietly been excellent in recent weeks.

Our bench must be confusing a few pundits out there with Walcott, Cazorla and Arteta coming on. A few months ago when we had a huge injury list many forgot to check the treatment room when commenting on our squad, instead deciding to point to youngsters like Isaac Hayden who have been on our bench on occasions earlier this season. We will be able to include Podolski very soon which is exciting.

We really need to be looking for a result in Naples as finishing second is likely to give us a very difficult draw.
