Hull City (h) – Jenkinson, Ramsey, Monreal & More

It is one of my pet hates watching professional players hitting balls into a box with no team mates anywhere near the ball. Speaking of full backs it appears that Monreal had another quality game and I have to say, I really like the guy. I think he offers us more end product than Kieran Gibbs and gives us better width. Which I guess is strange when you consider that Gibbs grew up as a winger while Monreal has always plied his trade at left full back. Gibbs has a far higher ceiling and has been fantastic this season so I expect him to remain as first choice. Unlike Jenkinson, it seems as if Monreal can slot back in without the need for game time. Although that may be a tad harsh as Monreal has featured heavily from the bench this season, often to close out games where as Jenkinson has hardly featured.

Last night’s game was the third league fixture in a row that I hadn’t been able to watch live. Which must be some sort of record for me. I don’t cope well when it comes to missing the Arsenal but there was little I could do to justify missing my daughters birthday meal at Pizza Express.

I did sneak a headphone in my ear though and got the radio reaction to Nicklas Bendtner heading us in front so early in the game. Such is the confidence and belief throughout the club I had felt as if there could now be no other result.

I have only managed to watch the highlights so far, it got too late to watch the full game so I can only give some general thoughts on the match.

I was quite surprised like everyone else about the pre game changes. Not just the fact that Bendtner was starting but that both Ramsey and Özil were still in the starting eleven. Clearly they are not struggling with fatigue because we would have taken them off after we doubled the lead early in the second half rather than give Ramsey 80 minutes and Özil the full 90.

Our first goal contained three quick moments of brilliance I thought. Rosicky’s reverse pass to Ramsey after a quick glance moments before and Ramsey’s measured pass to Jenkinson in between the defender yet the weight control not to over hit the ball out of play looked far easier than it probably was. Carl Jenkinson’s cross on the run was excellent. How Giroud must have been shaking his head on the bench, the poor guy never gets balls like that.

I hope Carl is staying behind after training sessions to practice that. Anybody who can kick a ball can whip a cross into a penalty box but you are a major asset if you can whip a ball in and pick someone out intentionally.

Against Marseille not so long ago I was waxing lyrical about Aaron Ramsey’s inventive passing. For Özil’s goal he shuffled past a defender and reversed a pass perfectly into the path of the German to cooly tuck away into the corner.

We all enjoy different aspects about the beautiful game we love so much. Some love a strong 50/50 challenge or a diving header. For me it is all about the lob over a keeper or the through pass, especially the reverse pass. If you look back over Ramsey’s career at Arsenal you can find many examples of some great key passes. He may not have the full range that Cesc or Bergkamp had but he has a substantial slice of the defence splitting cake (Whatever that is)

I am very much looking forward to watching the full game as I have read in a number of places that our combination play was first class. That is quite exciting when you think about the amount of changes that were made. In the past, a lot of changes usually down to the dreaded ‘i’ word meant that we had lost our cohesion which lead to dropped points.

The one complaint doing the rounds is that we did not kill the game off. I guess that is what happens when you have a group of creative players, they kill you but not kill the game unless everything clicks in front of goal. Our two killers are lurking in the background not too far away now. Theo Walcott came on for a shot as centre forward and Lukas Podolski is back in contention from next week. We will then have more ammunition in our Arsenal to kill off these games.
