When Song signed for Arsenal I heard no idea who he was just like most of Wenger signings so just waited for him to explode and come into his own just like Wenger most signings. He hasn’t exactly been a revelation and I remember him having one of the worst games an Arsenal player can have away at Fulham last season. He was then loaned out to Charlton where he played well but sadly couldn’t keep them from avoiding the drop.
This season.. .well he is not just playing football he is playing good football. He played at centre half in a couple of carling cup games and he played well but I believe that Arsene shouldn’t convert him to a defender like he did to Toure. No offence to Toure but he doesn’t have the skill Song has albeit raw. If Arsene uses his magic then I believe Song can excel as a defensive midfielder. The game against Steaua Bucharest, I though he did extremely well where he played in midfield and also against Blackburn he was deployed as a central defender this time but not only was he great but he also broke forward and lay a cesc-like pass to Eduardo for the winning goal in injury time!
He had his first call up to the Cameroon squad for the ANC to show for all his hard work. He started the tournament at the bench but due to mediocre performances from well known people such as Jean Makoun he came on as a sub and hasn’t looked back since! He has been sort of like the engine of the team and the semi-final versus Ghana he had the almighty Essien in his pocket the whole game, and although beaten for the man of the match by his Uncle, the national team wouldn’t be in the final if it wasn’t for him.
Now that Diarra has departed, if Wenger has been watching the ANC then Song has made a serious claim for a central midfielder role ahead of Gilberto, Denilson and Diaby. Gilberto is really past his best while Denilson has had an indifferent start to the season while Diaby is inconsistent. If Song is given a chance then I believe he will grasp it with both hands and he will develop into a really important player!
