Zapata excites me more than Nasri

I have said many times on my site that the idea of buying a commanding center back is more exciting than any other position. We know we can score goals with the current squad

I must admit my heart skipped a beat when I saw the Sky Sports story about us having a £9.5 million bid for Zapata rejected by Udinese. There are no quotes so we have to read with caution. I do tend to get sucked into stories when I have my guard down but it would make sense. I must hold my hands up and admit that I haven’t watched the guy play myself but I have heard from a lot of people that he is the real deal. Quick, Powerful, good in the air, a good reader of the game, 21 years old and 6ft2in! If you asked Arsene for a tick chart of what he wants in a defender then those attributes would all be included in his list.

Apparently Udinese want £15.8 million for the giant stopper which is a fat lot of money for a central defender. I do not think Arsenal would go to that amount for a defender. If it is true then I expect us to return with a bid in the £12,5 million region but no more than that.

I have said many times on my site that the idea of buying a commanding center back is more exciting than any other position. We know we can score goals with the current squad, we have creative talent all over the team, we have 6 first team goalscorers who will get more clinical as time goes on but the one area where we were lagging behind both Manchester United and Chelsea if in the middle of defence.

Like a lot of Gooners out there who are as Arsenal obsessed as myself, when you watch an Arsenal match most of the time you already know where the next pass is going to go and where the players are going to run. You also know that when the opposition swings in crosses into the box you do not feel totally comfortable about what is going to happen next. Watching other teams play football is a strange feeling for me because it is not what I am expecting in my mind. This whole point brings me on to last seasons Champions League final between the top 2 English teams.

Watching Rio Ferdinand, Vidic, Terry and Carvalho showed me quite clearly what central defending was about. Both teams cross the ball into the opposition box often so there was a lot of examples to use. Both pairs of central defenders were aggressive in the air, having the natural knack of getting to the ball first. Winning the first ball was their priority. I have been spoilt in my Arsenal fan life watching the likes of Adams, Bould, Linighan and Keown win practically everything in the air.

Arsene Wenger’s quest for total football has meant that the natural ‘over my dead body’ defender has gone and the converted midfield player has taken his place and we have noticed it at times last season and previous seasons for that matter. Phillipe Senderos is the closest to that player but there seems to be something missing from him, something I am not totally sure he will get at Arsenal.

So, as much as I want to see the likes of Nasri fly past the full back, play a 1-2 with Cesc and bend it into the top corner. I am more excited about Player x (possibly Zapata if true) win his 5th straight header in the penalty area when we are 1-0 with 5 minutes left.

In other news, Robin Van Persie has joined up with the Dutch squad and claims that he is ready for football, if not 90 minutes.

“I can say right now that I am ready for it, but it might be tough to play the full 90 minutes. Maybe I can be important for the team in some role, but that is for the coach to decide.

“But if I was in charge I would put myself in the starting team in nine out of 10 matches.”

haha, of course you would Robin. Luckily it is not down to you then because your injury problems would be worse than they already are. Is that actually possible? I’m not sure. From memory the last time I saw Van Persie play well was when he managed 45 minutes in the Champions League against Steaua Bucharest It has been a long time since we saw a fully fit RVP in the Arsenal shirt.

As good a player as David Villa is I do not know why so many Arsenal fans are calling for him to join the club for £17 million. We have Adebayor, Van Persie, Eduardo, Bendtner, Vela and Walcott who can play upfront. That is 6 players for 2 positions, ok Walcott will be a wide player but that is still his natural position. No need to spend money for no reason.

Another thing that is getting on my nerves at the moment is the whole ‘Wenger said that we would have 3 players by now and we have nothing, he is a liar!’

That really gets my Anelka goat. Have any of you thought for a second that the deals might be held up for some reason. I am not even sure if he said he will have all the targets wrapped up before the Euros, I think he was talking about the Nasri deal which obviously has been held up for some reason but it is likely to go through or so we are lead to believe.

Chelsea have bought a right back (big wow!), Manchester United have bought ZERO! Liverpool have bought ONE player, Tottenham have ONE player. IT IS THE 5TH OF JUNE! JUNE I SAY! Calm the hell down.. jeez!

I shouldn’t read other comments from other sites because it drives me crazy, some of the stuff I read is just insane.

Another comment that I hear is ‘We do not need another 17 year old talent’ Yep of course we don’t. There is no point truing to get another player like Cesc, Clichy, Walcott, Van Persie etc because they are not here and now. Come on, don’t be silly.

ok, I have got that off my chest and I feel a lot better.

I want to thank everyone who reads the site, it is much appreciated. I have received many emails through the Contact us button and 99% has been very positive about the site. We have turned from a small site (with a rather poor design by me) to a medium sized Arsenal site with a much better look. It is continuing to grow steadily in the last year or so. One day I want Arsenal Vision to be one of the biggest alongside the quality sites such as A Cultured left foot and Arseblog two of my favourites. Hopefully when we move to the new site before the start of next season we can be on that road. Your comments are vital to the site and the amount has been growing lately so please keep them up.

It is a glorious sunny day in North London so enjoy the sun and have a nice day. Drop your thoughts in the comments below as always.

Until tomorrow.
