Selling club? Don’t fall for it / Guess the match

I would like to hear the start of that quote that the News of the world seem to have accidentally left out. Could it be that Arsene was talking about the youth academy at the club? About the players who do not make it through the ranks?

Good morning Gooners,

Strange Wenger quotes from the News of the world today.

“The strategy of the club is to sell every year and to buy less expensive players,” he told the News of the World.

“We manage at Arsenal to maintain all our football ambitions – national and European – while having to free up – for 17 more years – an annual surplus of £24m to pay for our stadium.

“The club’s strategy is to favour the policy of youngsters ahead of stars and to count on the collective quality of our game.”

Sounds bad doesn’t it? I can imagine toys being thrown left right and center by a section of fans, but look at it a little closer.

‘The strategy of the club is to sell every year and to buy less expensive players’

Sell what? I would like to hear the start of that quote that the News of the world seem to have accidentally left out. Could it be that Arsene was talking about the youth academy at the club? About the players who do not make it through the ranks? That to me makes a little more sense. Why on earth would Wenger come out and say that Arsenal would sell their best players every year? He has publicly said many times that he wants to keep his best players.

Please remember where the quotes have come from.

Andrei Arshavin is back in the news again with his current club Zenit St Petersburg dropping him from their squad until his future is sorted out. Coach Dick Advocaat said.

“Andrei won’t play until things are all cleared up,” Advocaat told Russian reporters.

“It’s a joint decision. Better put, I told him he shouldn’t play and he agreed.”

Just to remind everyone who wears the trousers in their relationship. According to the Telegraph we are winning the race to sign the talented playmaker.

A source close to Arshavin has said that he wants his children to learn English instead of Spanish and WHEN he arrives in London he will have a translator with him and teach him intensively for two months.

Zenit want a transfer fee of about £23 million which is a lot of money for a 27 year old with not much sell on value and apparently the player is looking at around £6.3 million a year. With those figures I cannot imagine Arsenal being interested in doing any business.

Arshavin’s agent Dennis Lachter claims that Chelsea are no longer in the race as they have signed Deco which I think is rubbish. Chelsea do not care how many players they have in one position, if they become unhappy then they can just leave.

“I don’t believe that after this acquisition of Deco the club have retained their interest in Arshavin,” said Dennis Lachter. “Zenit want to get at least 30 million euros [£23.8m], and foreign clubs offer no more than 20 million euros [£15.8m].

“The situation is not at an impasse though. The transfer period only ends on Aug 31 and clubs are only just beginning to be proactive in the transfer market.

“Several potential buyers are involved as clubs sell their players,” he added. “Arshavin’s future may be dependent on conversations about [Alexander] Hleb, [Emmanuel] Adebayor, Cristiano Ronaldo and others.”

What is the deal with Alex Hleb? Cat got his representatives tongue? He had a couple of thousand people hired to speak for him and it seemed like a daily thing but hey, what has happened?

Inter Milan:

“Alexander is preparing to make one of the most important moves of his life,” Shpilevski told the Belarus paper Pressball. “He is leaving Arsenal even though they want to offer him a new long-term contract and better conditions. Only time will tell if leaving is the right decision, but there’s no way back now. Everything will be cleared up in the next two weeks.”

2 weeks? That was on the 9th May. Oh yeah, Jose Mourinho did not want anything to do with you did he?

Real Madrid:

“It is always a huge honour for every player when such a club as Real Madrid is interested in you,” Ferber told AS.

“It confirms the good work Hleb has achieved in the last few years is recognised by one of the greatest clubs in the world.

“Nobody can doubt that Real Madrid’s interest is a privilege for a footballer.”

Maybe they are a little more interested in trying to sign Ronaldo from Manchester United. Now the Barcelona links maybe disappearing as Joan Laporta is facing a vote of no confidence, which may delay any transfers in and out of the club

I was chatting to a Gooner mate last night and I made up a game of ‘guess the match’ (sad, I know) but we would describe a goal and the other person would have to guess the match. So I thought it may (or may not) be interesting to see if anyone can guess the match in the comments below.

Goals are easy, most Gooners should be able to get most of them right so I will use a missed chance from Adebayor [insert joke]

All you have to do is name the match and if it was home or away. Oh and one hint is that it was last season.

Eboue plays it ahead of him into the feet of Sagna
Who turns with his back to the opposition defender, falls onto his knee, gets up and spins inside, plays it to Adebayor
Who spins the defender, plays it into the feet of Walcott and makes a run into the box
Walcott takes a touch and plays a left footed return into the Adebayor
Who shoots first time to the bottom right of the keeper who makes a left handed save

I might look to give away prizes to winners depending on the interest on this one.

Have a good day. Drop your view in the comments.

Until tomorrow.
