walcott_2Yesterdays match looked like it proved to be a good physical work out for the young Arsenal players as the Hungarians fought for every ball and wanted to put on a good show infront of their own supporters.

Ramsay, Vela and Wilshere all starting! Wow, I thought to myself. Wilshere has forced his way into the bigger picture in this pre season. Arsene wanted to have a look at him alongside more established players. There are not many 16 year olds who get that privilege but the talent is fairly obvious.

The youngster started on the left hand side with Theo who all of a sudden looks an experienced pro compared to most of this pre season bunch.

I thought that Wilshere could not quite do what he does best from that side, a little like playing Robert Pires from the right, they can do it but you are not going to get the best out of them by doing it. He still had a decent game if not overly influential in the final third. You could also see that he has plenty more developing to do in the physical side of the game as he was given rough treatment from players twice his age.

Carlos Vela looks technically very good. He produced a lovely flick to Theo Walcott in the first half. And played a lovely long range pass to Bendtner after turning away from two opposition players moments later. He will get better but early signs seem very positive.

Ramsay was a little disappointing after a fantastic showing against Barnet but you can expect inconsistency from young players. He gave the ball away on a few occasions that he didn’t do against Barnet.

Theo Walcott had a better game from the right against trickier opponents than he did playing upfront against Barnet. He had one run early in the game where he got around the back four but his square pass from the byline was cut out. That will be important to us next season. There are not many players who can get around the fullback into dangerous areas in our squad at present.

Carlos Vela should have got his name on the score sheet when a cross was played practically on his head but the Mexican decided to try and step back and control it on his chest. Most goalscorers would have header ed into the goal. Still rusty? naturally not instinctive enough? lost his bearings? Not sure as yet, but we will find out. Denilson slammed the loose ball against the underside of the crossbar.

Bendtner improved from his weekend display and linked up the team quite well. It is a shame that he lacks the pace that Adebayor has.

Krisztian Kenesei produced the opening goal with a ‘dink’ over Almunia after Gavin and Justin Hoyte did not track the player. The brothers were pretty awful throughout the first half and it will be unlikely that we witness a partnership like that in an important match.

Theo Walcott equalised with a wonderfully drilled shot from a wide position after great work from Bendtner who’s Bergkamp esque pull down from a high ball and poke through set up the chance to which No.14 Walcott expertly converted.

At half time Ramsay, Vela, G Hoyte and Almunia were replaced for Lansbury, Lansbury, Traore and Mannone respectively. Walcott joined Bendtner upfront.

Interestingly Wenger played Clichy and Sagna as a central defensive partnership with Justin Hoyte and Armand Traore as the fullbacks. Sagna actually played very well in that position.

Francis Coquelin and Jay Simpson came on in 62 and the young Frenchman showed real promise. Coquelin is a 17 year old found in the second division of French football a little the way Gael Clichy was found. He looks very good on the ball, strong in the tackle and like Clichy has the great ability of nicking the ball from the feet of the opposition at great speed. From his brief appearance against Barnet and then the 28 minutes or so last night may just see him jump the queue a little for the quest to become a firs team player.

Arsenal had a few chances to win the game in the second half but it didn’t quite happen. We should start seeing some of the international players on Monday including Samir Nasri hopefully.
