YourVision – Centre Midfield Thoughts : We need a Midfield General!!
If we can get an out and out defensive midfielder , not just any old work horse like we had in Flamini though he was fantastic for us last season, but someone who would not only be efficient at breaking up play

I just wanted to share my view on our current question mark concerning our distinct lack of man power in the holding midfield position. I think we need get an out and out defensive midfielder. Not because we are desperate for one, as personally i think Diaby can be the business in that position, but because Wenger has made it clear that he’s not in the market for a centre half and so it makes absolute logical sence to get a pure holding midfeild player to cover our frequently calamitous defense who often fail to keep a clean sheet or shut up shop on a 1-0 lead with 10 or 20 minutes left in a game let alone against the big four.
If we can get an out and out defensive midfielder , not just any old work horse like we had in Flamini though he was fantastic for us last season, but someone who would not only be efficient at breaking up play and an eye for both a pass and a a well timed forward charge but also have the Presence that would make our opponents have to think three times over in the final third of the pitch when comming at us. Something Flamini never had and will never have in his Arsenal.
We need a fearless midfield General, someone with height, strength and an intimidating presence who can tackle with a bit of meat & steal and is able to handle those annoying long balls to powerful centre forwards our centre halfs just arent built to handle. At the same time he must put a little fear into our opponents attacking midfeilders. Someone like a Mamadu Diarra or even Papa Bouba Diop [who i know we can get for pennies and thus making him the perfect buy for our Mr. Wenger], who has experience and who Wenger can work with.
That would not only make our centre halfs more comfortable but it also allows them to use their pace to pick of the little balls that might get through or to be more effective at man marking which would help to silence 90 minute threats like Torres or Teves or at closing down forwards who are good at holding up the ball, like Rooney or Berbashite or Drogba. It would also allow Fabregas to focus a lot more on his attacking game which we all know he is the best at in the EPL if not the world at the moment. At the same time if we then move Diaby into that very same holding midfield position we would have something we dont have last season, strength in depth in the holding midfeild role because lets face it, as much as we all love Gilberto he doesnt have the legs anymore to play at the pace we do and seeing him come onto the pitch last season more often than not ended up in a negative result for us and imbalanced the team. [ It was particularly painful seeing him in at centre back, “oh the horror!!!”]
If Arsene Wenger really does want to stabalise the centre midfeild position this is just one way he can go about it, in Diaby we have a player with great potential for that position but i also foresee a few red cards, a la Viera and thus bans for him, therefore it would be prudent to have a a like fo like back up in a Diop or Mamadu Diarra for just such occasions. Either way what we truely need as a squad is not just strength in deapth but also Balance through compliment to allow the squad room for more focus on specialised duties.
