Professional players should never lose by having the wrong attitude

Theo Walcott, Cesc Fabregas, Robin Van Persie and Emmanuel Adebayor were all off their game yesterday. It is very difficult to win football matches with 40% of your first team not playing well

There are three results in football during a game. Win, lose or draw, we all know that. We all know that every team in the Premier League this season will have combinations of all of these results and we can expect it from our side.

What makes every game different is the manor of those results. Lets turn our attentions to defeats. You can lose a match by dominating the opposition, create plenty of chances that you do not take by great goalkeeping, bad luck and bad finishing. You can lose by being the inferior side and being outplayed.

Professional players should never lose by having the wrong attitude.

Isn’t this the reason why they are supposed to be professionals in the first place? As Squid boy pointed out, you could tell after the first 5-10 minutes what type of performance we were about to witness. The tempo was very slow, plenty of sideways passes no urgency.

When Hull were on the ball we let them having time and space and let them play football. The played the ball early to the feet of their front men and joined them very well.

The game should have been won after Cesc bundled the ball in off McShane. 10 minutes later Geovanni who had a few earlier efforts high and wide hit an absolute screamer into the top corner. A wonderful strike. Hull City had the confidence to take the game to Arsenal and once again William Gallas was beaten to a header from a set piece.

Wenger will have to stick or twist and he knows it. He has made Gallas captain which means that it is now very difficult to drop him. Kolo Toure should not have been brought in place of Djourou at the start of the season, especially when he did not have a proper pre season.

As much as the defence is clearly an issue I don’t think it was the real problem. Had we faced Manchester United, Chelsea or Real Madrid we would have flown out of the blocks, flying into tackles, attacking at speed but this is not the first time that the team have gone into a game expecting to win without putting in the effort.

Wenger praises his players, gives them the confidence to believe they are the best in the world but sometimes that spills into arrogance. You would have thought that the Fulham result would have still been fresh in their minds but obviously not.

Tuesday’s side would have put in a much better shift that the first team did yesterday because they had to fight to show what they could do. Wenger needed to give the players a right bollocking but that chances of that are slim.

The players have the talent to win the league, I do not doubt that for one moment, but they need to make sure they have the attitude for EVERY game from now on.
