YourVision – Aaron Ramsey tipped for great things by Wales boss
Ramsey has already broken a number of records and if he continues to progress, I would be happy to place a football bet on him breaking more in an Arsenal shirt

First of all let me apologise. I hate it when young players come through and are tipped to be ‘the new’ somebody else. Every player is their own player and own person and suggesting they will be as good as somebody else just puts unwanted pressure on them. However, I wanted to highlight and discuss the views of Bryan Flynn who believes that Arsenal youngster Aaron Ramsey can be as good, if not better, than Cesc Fabregas.
The Wales Under-21 boss says that at Ramsey’s age of 17, he sees him as ‘good as Fabregas’ at the same age. Flynn went on to say that the player can go onto be ‘whatever he wants’. He also cited the influence of Arsene Wenger as a huge factor behind his beliefs that Ramsey will excel as a professional footballer.
So, how accurate are these comments? Well, it’s obvious the potential is there. The 17-year-old is technically fantastic and extremely comfortable on the ball – you won’t see him give possession away too easily, that’s for sure. These are also attributes that a certain Mr Fabregas possesses in abundance, so perhaps Flynn’s comments aren’t too wide of the mark.
Something Ramsey has done is have a rather high profile start to his career. He has broken a number of records in his short time as a footballer. He was the youngest player to represent Wales Under-21’s and the youngest ever player to represent Cardiff City when he came on as a substitute against Hull City aged just 16 years and 124 days. Ramsey has also made an FA Cup final appearance, doing so with Cardiff last season when they lost to Portsmouth at Wembley. Throw in a full international call up and it’s been quite a year for the youngster.
All of these records, as well as the Wembley appearance contribute to what I believe is one of Ramsey’s finest attributes. Despite being so young, he firmly has his feet on the ground. He looks like he has been playing the game for 10 years when he is out on the pitch – that’s how assured he is on a football field. It is what he was born to do and if he can live up to the potential he has shown – he will go very far as a player.
So far this season, he has shown glimpses of what he can do. He played the whole 90 minutes in a hard-fought victory at FC Twente as well as in the 6-0 drubbing of Sheffield United. He also came on as a substitute in the away victories at Bolton and Blackburn – so Wenger is obviously very keen to get him involved. All be it for only a few minutes in the league games.
One thing for sure is that despite operating on the left hand side of midfield for the majority of his Cardiff days, Ramsey is more at home in a central position. He impressed in this role during pre-season and it is definitely where his future lies. He can control the game from the centre of the park and will one day become an ideal ‘replacement’ for Fabregas who is being linked with a move to Barcelona.
Ramsey has already broken a number of records and if he continues to progress, I would be happy to place a football bet on him breaking more in an Arsenal shirt. Whether that be appearance records, trophies won or whatever. He is the future of this club and is destined to have a long and successful career in the game.
