I remember when he tried to give Upson a chance, against Aston Villa at Highbury if my memory serves me correctly. He dropped Keown and started Upson
Good morning Gooners,
I am looking forward to the West Ham game tomorrow. With Zola in charge, it feels like unknown territory. He has provided them with good attacking football and has entertained the Upton Park faithful but we are yet to see what he is like against better opposition. Will he get his team to pin us back and attack us? Or will he try and stop us playing. Hopefully it is the former but we do not know as yet.
I want to talk more about it but I guess it is better to wait until tomorrow’s My Vision as the game is on Sunday.
Mr Capi has been a naughty boy, he was caught with a cigarette in his mouth outside a London nightclub. He has had a right telling off from Le Boss. After his telling off Le Boss reinstalled faith in him in true Wenger style.
Wenger Said:
“I didn’t see the picture, I have been informed by (Head of Communications) Amanda Docherty, but I don’t like that. I will check that with him.
“He has a responsibility as captain of Arsenal Football Club that cannot be accepted.”
I think that is just sheer madness in my eyes. He would have known exactly what Wenger expects from all the players in terms of diet and health. He would have told all the players that smoking is a clear no no. So he brakes the rules, but to do it outside a bloody London nightclub where he would obviously be spotted. Insane.
Wenger Said:
“I believe he has got a lot of unfair critics and therefore I believe the fact that he could take it and he is still as motivated.
“What you can never fault with William is the motivation.
How many times does a captain need to be spoken to about his behaviour?
He has criticised the medical staff
Publicly slammed (I love that word) Alex Hleb for his foul on a PSV player
Blew his top at St Andrews, although I sympathised with him slightly that day. Although is he captain he is only human and emotional. I remember punching a chest of draws that day infront of my daughter and I regretted it afterwards as it upset her at the time.
And now caught smoking when it is club policy not to.
I was all for Gallas being the Captain when he was chosen because I thought he would add steel and a winning mentality but now I have to admit that I have been swayed. The trouble is, I do not think we have any captains in the club. It is not just the armband it is the lack of leaders in the club which is a worry.
Maybe the likes of Ramsey can install that into the squad in future.
On the subject of defenders (Gallas not Ramsey) Arsene was speaking about Matthew Upson and how he would have love to have kept him at the club.
Wenger said:
“He is one of the players that I would have loved to hang on to,” admitted the Frenchman at his pre-match press conference.
“If you take the players in the Premier League who have been educated here there are plenty of them. Steve Sidwell, David Bentley, Fabrice Muamba, Matthew Upson… but at some stage if you don’t play them you have to let them go.
“What is important is that they make a career. Upson has made a fantastic career and I knew he was at the age where I had to give it to him or let him go.
“I felt he had, for a very tall guy, quick feet, good pace, a good left foot, a good long ball and he was good in the air. For a centre back that is not bad. He was good on the ball and that is why I am not surprised he has made a good career.”
I remember when he tried to give Upson a chance, against Aston Villa at Highbury if my memory serves me correctly. He dropped Keown and started Upson and the boy had a nightmare and was replaced at half time. That was basically the end for Upson’s Arsenal career.
To be honest, Arsene is not going to say ‘Upson was never good enough for the club, he had to go and quick. Some mugs took him off our hands and I could sleep better at night. And overall…..’
Well done to the lad though, he has improved and has developed into an England international.
Before I go, I would like to send good luck to Everton and I would say that the best way to respond to last weeks defeat is to injure their best players and beat them good and proper.
Back for some West Ham chat tomorrow, but you can always read James Poplett’s Match Preview
