YourVision – Goalkeeping Crisis at the Emirates
Despite Fabianski playing well in the Carling Cup (I recall him making an excellent double save against Wigan), he is still clearly not ready in my eyes to replace Almunia, considering his poor display against Burnley

I’m starting to have serious doubts regarding the current goalkeepers in our first team squad.
Despite Almunia replacing Lehmann after the Blackburn game last season and enjoying a very good stint in goal, he hasn’t gone up another level this season in my opinion and has carried out some of the following mistakes which were keeping him out of the team during Lehmann’s reign:
• The inability to provide a calming influence to the defence (traits which Seaman & Lehmann both had)
• Poor distribution (handling and kicking)
• Inability to be dominant in the air when it comes to attacking crosses coming into the box.
• The lack of ability to recover his confidence after conceding a goal (this was clearly evident in the 4-4 game against Spurs).
Almunia conducted mistakes in two consecutive games for us this season against Spurs and Stoke, but Wenger refused to replace him with Fabianski. Is it because he doesn’t feel Fabianski is ready to play in the first team?
Despite Fabianski playing well in the Carling Cup (I recall him making an excellent double save against Wigan), he is still clearly not ready in my eyes to replace Almunia, considering his poor display against Burnley. He was showing some of the faults that Almunia has been doing for us this season.
I’ve seen very little of Vito Mannone, but from the comments I’ve heard from people who attend our reserve games, he hasn’t looked totally convincing either.
I can’t see Wenger splashing out on a new goalkeeper in the January transfer window, but I think it’s critical that he looks into strengthening this area in the summer.
Can you honestly say that Almunia (or Fabianski for that matter) are better than any of the following keepers who are currently plying their trade in the Premiership?
• Van Der Sar
• Ben Foster
• Carlo Cudicini
• Petr Cech
• Pepe Reina
• Joe Hart
• Brad Friedal
• Shay Given
• Scott Carson
• Tim Howard
• David James
• Jussi Jaaskelainen
• Robert Green
• Chris Kirkland
Out of the above goalkeepers, I would love Wenger to make a bid for Chris Kirkland. He has been one of the most consistent goalkeepers in the Premiership this season, he’s very agile, excellent at coming out for crosses and he provides a calming influence to his defence. Also he is used to playing in the Premiership (how many times has he performed miracles for his sides whenever he has played against us).
