Are you a fan or supporter? / Wigan Thoughts

I assumed that the supporters were in the majority, I hope they are but I have to say that the treatment of Emmanuel Eboue frightened me. Is this what supporting your side has become?

Much has already been said about the Emmanuel Eboue situation and I think Squid Boy summed it up perfectly HERE.

I have been thinking about the support of the Arsenal fans lately, before the Eboue incident and it was clear that there is a divide between the men and women who sit in the stands, the people who sit behind a computer and give their own opinions and views. Yesterdays reaction proved that I was correct.

I thought everyone was labelled the same, backers of the Arsenal football club, team and management. Obviously there will be situations that happen over the years that make you feel worse than at other times when everything seems rosy.

We are all different as human beings, we all have our own version of things but the general reason why you went to watch Arsenal was to support Arsenal. At least that is how I remembered it in the George Graham days.

These days, I listen to views, watch reactions like yesterday and I automatically divide you into a fan or a supporter. I am a supporter of the club, I support the manager, I support the players. Wherever we finish I will support the side and wish them well.

The new breed of Arsenal fan seems to be on the increase. They pay the highest ticket prices in the country so they demand trophies, they do not want to wait for anything because it is all about now. Manchester United have spent big money on a striker so why aren’t Arsenal? If the side finish below top then changes are needed.

I assumed that the supporters were in the majority, I hope they are but I have to say that the treatment of Emmanuel Eboue frightened me. Is this what supporting your side has become? How on earth is this going to benefit the team that we are trying to back. Booing is one thing, if an Arsenal player, spat at our manager or kicked another player then perhaps you could make a case for defending your club, although I am still unsure how it could improve anything. But to boo a young player who is trying to do the right things but is lacking confidence is insane. It is counter productive which makes it all the more laughable. I wish it was laughable.

It was not the greatest performance yesterday and Wenger was right about the side playing with the handbrake on. The side looked nervous and knew how important the game was after previous slip ups. A supporter would say well done to the side for grinding out a result. It took Manchester United 91 minutes, a deflection and a post to beat Sunderland at home. The fan would say that Arsenal were lucky to pick up three points and should be beating sides like Wigan 5-0.

Prior to Eboue’s injury. he had been one of our most consistent performers and had made a big improvement from last season so I expect the boss to give him the confidence that he clearly needs. If you are a fan then please consider the impact of your negative outbursts and if you are a supporter then please continue doing what you are doing, your club and players need you.
