I was willing Henry to score just so we could cheer his goal, the result of the game meant absolutely nothing to me whatsoever so when the boo’s rang around the ground at the full time whistle I was truly bemused. Honestly, I thought I had missed an incident or something

As Emirates cup tournaments go, this one wasn’t the best for Arsenal. It certainly wouldn’t be one that Carlsberg would want to own up to sponsoring that’s for sure. A few of our recent flaws were evident over the last few days. I am just thankful that we didn’t concede from a set piece as I do not think that I could handle even louder groans.
The game on Saturday was certainly more enjoyable over the two days, our first half football was very good, direct with quick combination passing. Frimpong looks very good for his age, he is very tenacious and is perfectly suited for a pressing game. While he is not Jack Wilshere under pressure with the ball at his feet, he is only 19 and will improve that side of his game. It was nice to see Frimpong and Wilshere play again together for the first time since last pre season. Those two have been playing together since the age of nine and I can see them forging a wonderful partnership in the future for this great club.
Gervinho continued to shine against Boca, one run down the right when he touched it past the full back on one side and ran around him on the other got the crowd off their feet. It was Gervinho who made the assist for the first goal, played down the left his early cross with his weaker side allowed Van Persie who spun off into space to slide the ball home.
Aaron Ramsey’s goal just after the break was typical Ramsey. While some Arsenal players are reluctant to pull the trigger, Ramsey certainly isn’t. Vela’s run was skilful and direct while Ramsey’s strike was struck with venom.
Vermaelen and Koscielny were faultless in the first half and it remains a partnership that I have every bit of faith and confidence in. Wenger made a number of second half changes which obviously disrupted the team in almost every aspect.
Squillaci was at fault for the first goal while Djourou could not get enough on the ball to prevent the second goal. While losing a lead was a familiar feeling it is worth noting that changing your central defensive partnership as well as plenty more outfield players will not happen once the league starts.
Sunday’s game against the New York red bulls was a totally different type of game. I found it interesting to see that we were very close to full strength apart from a few first teamers. Theo Walcott is injured, Cesc Fabregas is waiting for his move to Barcelona to happen but why wasn’t Samir Nasri included in what should have been our strongest available team?
Szczesny
Sagna Koscielny Vermaelen Gibbs
Song Wilshere
Ramsey
Rosicky Van Persie Gervinho
If Arsene was trying to gel his team together before the season kicks off then why wasn’t Nasri in the team ahead of Rosicky? Why didn’t Rosicky start on Saturday and Nasri saved until Sunday?
I don’t know if that was an indication from the manager about his intentions for the new season. I guess you could argue that Arshavin could also have been in Sunday’s team ahead of Tomas. I guess only the boss knows what is going
Wilshere’s injury left me very concerned whilst at the ground. With mobile phone signals behind harder to find than a Chamakh shot, I was left in the dark for sometime until I was finally able to hear the news via twitter.
It gave Rosicky the chance to play central and also gave youngster Benik Afobe the chance to feature for the first team. Gervinho was less effective in the final third than previous Arsenal games but he still ran at players which was great to see.
I thought Rosicky rolled back the years in the center of midfield, some of his movement to make space to receive a pass was wonderful. He twisted and turned and linked his team together, The only thing that was missing consistently was the final pass, When he did make that final pass we were not able to take our chances.
Aaron Ramsey was wasteful and Van Persie was not presented with many chances. But currently our first team is missing its creative edge, its spark is unsettled and is not available so it is no surprise that we were not at our incisive best.
Cesc Fabregas is the player who opens the door, Samir Nasri is the player who skips past challenges and gets into dangerous positions, Theo Walcott scores goals and makes assists. None of these players were available to Arsene Wenger either through injury or possible departure. If Cesc or Nasri leave the club then Wenger will buy a creative replacement or two. That should be obvious.
Thierry Henry’s reception was wonderful, he was cheered louder than the Arsenal players. He still has that x factor as well. Keeps the ball in the tightest of areas and still has the vision to cut open teams as he showed for the equaliser.
I was willing Henry to score just so we could cheer his goal, the result of the game meant absolutely nothing to me whatsoever so when the boo’s rang around the ground at the full time whistle I was truly bemused. Honestly, I thought I had missed an incident or something.
Were the supporters really booing because we did not win a pre season friendly? Frustration is obviously building up because we are short on silverware, we pay the highest ticket prices and we haven’t completed all our transfer business yet like many other clubs etc etc but is this the precedent that we are setting?
If fans are going to boo before the season starts then does this mean that any result in the actual season that is less than three points deserves booing from our own fans?
This is only my opinion and I don’t claim to speak for anyone but myself, but it is absolutely insane. I respect that some others are less patient and more frustrated than myself, that is only normal but if everyone wants Arsenal to win trophies then this is certainly not the way to go about it.
If I was an undercover Tottenham fan with an aim to make Arsenal a worst team then I would go to the ground and boo with the hope that it makes the atmosphere hostile and tense. I am not suggesting that those who booed are similar to Tottenham supporters, I am sure that is far from the case but those actions are far more detrimental to our team than what any Tottenham fan could muster.
There has to be a better way to let your feelings known than turning what is supposed to be the 12th man into the 10th man. Contact the club, write to Gazidis about how we need Loric Cana, Miguel Veloso, Mark Schwarzer or whichever the latest player is supposed to make us the best. Poisoning the atmosphere at our home ground is surely not going to bring success to the club. I would suggest that if you want a greater chance of success that then the mindless booing has to stop.
It wasn’t the best Emirates Cup in the world but big movement both in and out is still on the cards so viewing that team as the final product would be ill advised at this time.
I cannot wait for the transfer window to close so we can get on with the proper football, the rest is a little depressing right now.
