Walcott could be our new Marc Overmars

Robin Van Persie looked close to his attacking best. Although he didn’t manage to get on the score sheet (Thanks to the bar and post) I thought his approach play and creative influence was superb

As soon as we lost last week to Manchester United I thought to myself that it wouldn’t be a surprise if we now went and won the rest of our games which would be just typical of Arsenal.

Theo Walcott finally got his start on the right wing in place of Eboue who sat on the bench. Theo Walcott seems to have that incredible ability to make me contradict myself time and time again.

He was fantastic yesterday, the best starting performance for quite sometime. He adds penetration and pace to a very square looking team.

His all round game was good, receiving the ball in tight areas, controlling the ball and finding a teammate. He played some 1 2’s that were very difficult for Reading to stop.

I really do think that Walcott could be our new Marc Overmars. Someone to leave the right touchline and get into center forward positions where he can be slipped in by Cesc as Overmars used to do with Bergkamp’s assistance.

Robin Van Persie looked close to his attacking best. Although he didn’t manage to get on the score sheet (Thanks to the bar and post) I thought his approach play and creative influence was superb.

He dropped into deep areas to link up with Cesc and Hleb which worked very well. I also noticed that Van Persie seemed to be the striker to pull into wide areas instead of Adebayor who seemed to play alot more central.

The one negative to our performance was the amount of wasted chances yet again. Fabregas, Van Persie, Song, Adebayor were all guilty of missing chances that they should really be converting. We saw it at Old Trafford infact we have seen this throughout the last few seasons with the current crop of players.

How is Arsene going to solve this issue? Quite clearly it is an issue. Eduardo is the only natural clinical finisher in the squad. Robin Van Persie is a player who will score goals with powerful shots, Adebayor will continue to score goals but he will miss chances. I think Walcott has the potential to be clinical infront of goal he just needs games and chances for him to prove this.

Will Arsene add to the team to solve this problem? If so in place of who? I expect Arsene to continue with the philosophy of dominating possession, creating chances and eventually the goals will come.

One of my favourites, Alex Hleb was very lucky to stay on the pitch yesterday according to the letter of the law. Hleb swung out at Graeme Murty and caught him on his face with his hand. It was not a punch, probably just a slap, but after Aliadière’s punishment for barely touching Mascherano you would have thought that Hleb had to go. The referee probably missed the incident but what is the point in luck turning around now? It is a little late for that really. I would rather continue the bad luck until next season. Last week we got a goal from a handball, now Hleb escapes a sending off. I think Lady luck is a Spurs supporter. Maybe not, they wouldn’t be so shit otherwise.

Going back to positives, the new corner routine from Cesc and Van Persie is a massive bonus. It has alot of variation and alot of quality from Van Persie’s left foot. It would be interesting to see Hleb and Van Persie over the ball so both players have the ability to dummy the corner blocker. Cesc Fabregas has better delivery though. I hope we see this next season throughout the season. Our corner conversion rate would surely improve considerably.

Eboue came on for Toure and was better than his countryman. When we are under no pressure defensively Eboue is the best right back in the world. Much better than he is in right midfield.

Arsene Wenger spoke about this current crop of players after the Reading victory.

Wenger said: “This has been the best [football] played at Arsenal since I’ve been here.
“The collective technical display has been the best in the last 12 years, but we have not won.
“Maybe, with some distance, you could say that we had nothing to lose at the start of the season and when we were under pressure at the start of March, we lost a bit.
“We were unlucky and there was also maybe a lack of maturity. But when you see us win like we did today, with so much quality, it makes it even more important to keep the squad together.
“This will also help us to convince people we have to win with our own style.”

I hope we can win the remanding of our games, who knows it could mean another unbeaten season next season. Wishful thinking? Perhaps.

I have mentioned the new Arsenal Vision site before but just to remind you guys that your ideas on how to improve it and make it more interesting would be great. I am looking to add a podcast, weekly poll and maybe even a forum. The design should be great, so watch this space. If you want to contribute ideas then please click the CONTACT US link.

Thank you to all who have submitted their own articles on the YourVision section. The one thing I ask of you guys is to spell check before you submit, I will not do it myself because I don’t like the idea of interfering with readers articles. Because to me it no longer feels like something from you. I appreciate that not everyone who sends articles speaks English as a first language so the spell check can really help.

Right, have a good day. More tomorrow.

Until tomorrow.
