We can talk all we like about Theo being converted as a striker but someone who has just come back from injury is doing a very good job of being on the way to being an automatic starter. Eduardo Da Silva is a truly world class goal scorer
Wow, what a difference a few weeks make. It wasn’t long ago when we couldn’t find a way past West Ham, Tottenham, Sunderland and Fulham. We have now scored 6 in the last two games and could have scored many more. You can look at the level of competition and say that we should be scoring goals against West Brom and Burnley but I think we can raise the level of opposition now that we have our attacking talents back and we will cause them problems as well.
The good thing is that Eduardo and Walcott have both come back from injuries and look immediately sharp. I have said that I expect Theo to have a slow start, maybe give the ball away for the first few games and over hit crosses and so on but from his brief cameo, it looks like I could be gladly proved incorrect.
Theo looks to have filled out a little, I am not sure if my eyes are deceiving me or if he has had a few sets of bench presses in his spare time, although Arsene has said that he does not agree with players weight training to build muscle. It could well be natural growth as Theo is still bang in the middle of turning from a boy into a man.
Something that got me thinking was Arsene substitution. Eduardo made way for Theo Walcott, who moved up alongside Van Persie. A few questions appear in my mind. Is that just a change for that situation in that game? or was there something else behind that. Has Theo been using part of his time out injured to come back as a striker? It reminds me of when Thierry Henry came to the club, he started off on the bench and soon made starts on wing. We had an international class striker in Davor Suker who had roughly a strike rate of 1 in every 2/3 games for Arsenal in his short stay at the club. One game (I cannot even attempt to remember which one it was) Henry started up front with Suker on the bench. What?!! Why?! I thought with a bit of frustration. In those days I didn’t quite realise how much Wenger knew, I suppose it is a bit like some of the fans today.
Well, I have no reason to explain what happened after that switch. The difference this time around is that Theo has much more competition on his hands. Currently Van Persie, Adebayor, Eduardo, Bendtner and probably Carlos Vela are ahead of him at this moment in time. To be honest we haven’t seen what he has done in Wenger’s study… the training ground.
The move away from the half striker and speedster and never quite settled right with me, just as the Adebayor / Van Persie partnership has totally made me 100% comfortable, not that I have any reason to be unhappy with it when both players are in form.
Anyway this is a query for the boss to ponder, I am sure he already knows what his long term plans are around the pitch. I am sure that his first choice team when everyone is fit is tucked away in his head, just as what age he intends to bring Wilshere into the first team. We will not know these things until he is ready to do so, it is nice when we are surprised with these things though.
We can talk all we like about Theo being converted as a striker but someone who has just come back from injury is doing a very good job of being on the way to being an automatic starter. Eduardo Da Silva is a truly world class goal scorer. I would be excited flicking through his stats at the end of a season if he became a permanent fixture on the team sheet. I spoke about our draws earlier in the article, but it is hard to imagine many if any of those games finishing scoreless if we had such a predator in the box. I can honestly say that I can count and remember the amount of misses in good goalscoring opportunities he has made since he has joined the club. Yes he hasn’t played as many games as for example Adebayor and Van Persie but we know how clinical he is. Stick in Arshavin, Rosicky and Cesc behind Eduardo and you could almost guarantee goals.
Roma on Wednesday should be fun, it is difficult to pick the team for that one but you can imagine that the likes of Denilson, Nasri and Bendtner who didn’t feature will all start. The rest depends on fitness and what Wenger wants his team to do. Does he play Diaby alongside Denilson to add an attacking threat or does he sit back more with the impressive Song? I would have assumed that Eboue would have played to add some physical power and driving runs but he played 90 minutes on Sunday. All will be revealed in good time ol chap, you’ll see.
Before I go I just want to thank our youngsters for showing so much improvement during the season. There has been many groans and complaints from our supporters about some of the players, for some reason some forget that we have had a first choice midfield sat on the treatment table. Alex Song has been a young player, playing his first proper season in the Arsenal midfield. Denilson is 21 years old and has taken the jump up from reserve football. It is the same for Bendtner, Djourou, Vela and Ramsey. We shouldn’t be writing these players off.
The only positive slant you can take from a stupidly injury ridden season is that we have had to force our developing players to grow up and learn the game on the job. Next season they will all be better for it, so if we have to go through injuries as bad then they will no longer be untested players, they would have been there and done that and can stand in and fight for places.
As far as I can see, most of our squad are on the way up in terms of form. The only players who may not be at present are Adebayor and Silvestre and that can still change. It is all coming together at the business end of the season.
Right, another typical rant of mine is now over. Tomorrow’s post may be another late one, got many errands to run during the day.
