For some strange reason, I feel much better today. I cannot think of what it could be *sigh of pleasure*
I am indeed talking about the Chelsea result last night. I am not one for talking about other teams on my Arsenal site but I feel I need to share it with you.
For starters, I am pleased that a footballing side like Barcelona are through to the final, it will be an interesting game of quality football from both sides, instead of the typical two British sides counteracting each other. God, Chelsea bore me to tears.
But lets be real, Chelsea should be through to the final. Bad refereeing? Personally I do not think so. Bad refereeing would be making a decision that he is not sure about. There is no way in this world that someone given the chance to make calls in a Champions League semi final would get all of those penalty decisions incorrect.
Chelsea have accused the powers that be, of wanting to stop an all English final for the second year running. Far fetched? Something is ticking away in this little mind that I own that not all is as it seems in the football world.
Everyone aside from a small section of West London wanted to see the Barca vs Arsenal *Sniff sniff* Manchester United final, it would generate more money, it would be watched by more, it would be higher profile. I can’t help but think that money talks a little too much in our lives.
This brings me back to our beloved team. Something has stuck in my head and is not spoken about very much, the media casually turned a blind eye to it but not me.
Last season at the Emirates in the Champions League quarter final against Liverpool, Dirk Kuyt pulled down Alex ‘Ice Cream’ Hleb in front of the referee. As clear as day. My little sister would have given the right decision but it was missed. At Anfield their spot kick was far softer but it was given. There were many more decisions that went against us at the business end of the season last year and I struggle to believe that it is coincidence. The ‘it evens itself out’ mantra is a load of rubbish. Any possible bias or agenda wouldn’t neatly balance itself out.
I do not know the reason why anyone would prefer Liverpool to go through ahead of Arsenal but I believe that was the case and I am sticking by that.
If people in power can kill innocent people for financial reasons (allegedly) then who is to say that our game that we love so much is perfect and fair. Anyway, I am walking along the border of football and politics and my knowledge of the latter is admittedly rubbish so lets stick to the former which some would argue is rubbish also.
Oh before I leave that subject totally, you know that rule where a red card cannot be overturned? You know when they have rules in place well…
‘I have spoken with Alex Ferguson personally on this – as fate would have it we shared a car after the match,’ revealed the Uefa general secretary.
‘We were rather thrown together but had an interesting discussion. He was very fair about the referee and what had happened but equally he was very disappointed for Darren, as are we all. I tried to give Alex as much advice as I could with regards the procedure in these circumstances. There is no formal process. But if the club want to write to us with information – such as video evidence – explaining why they think this is a harsh punishment then they can do that.
‘The likelihood is that we’d then refer the matter to our disciplinary body. They would then look to see if there were any special circumstances to justify any departure from established procedures. I must stress there is normally no way these matters can be overturned.’
‘The ref may take the view a mistake has been made and include that in his report but that wouldn’t be in any way decisive,’ he continued.
‘It’s an entirely discretionary thing, whether or not the committee feels there is reason to intervene. That’s the position. Strictly speaking there’s no appeal process but representation can be made and looked at.’
Well that’s bloody interesting. A nice little cosy chat on the way home was it? Do you think it would be the same if it was Cesc Fabregas? Do you? Rubbish!
I am just waiting for the headline. I wonder how they will go about explaining it.
Alex Ferguson should go for it. Why stop there? Why not try and convince UEFA to make Barca play without a goalkeeper. They can think of something, surely!
No I am not paranoid, and no it is nothing to do with all that weed I have been smoking!! (disclaimer: I [Mean Lean] did not really indulge in inhaling any illegal substances, the line was used only to provide some light humour, I do not condone smoking illegal substances and I apologise to those who may be offended. Thank you Mean Lean)
I am looking forward to next season now, our work here is over, not quite done but over. We could well beat Chelsea on Sunday but I do not see them losing another by the end of the season so I think we may have to settle for fourth, which is a darn sight better than fifth.
It wasn’t too long ago when Aston Villa were beating Stoke City 2-0 at Villa Park which would have seen them stretch the gap to eight points, how quickly football changes.
We were taught a lesson by Manchester United over two legs and clearly they were the better team in both games but I still do not back down and say that we are much worse than them. In this moment in time with the players we both have available, and the momentum and form then I have no argument, but get everyone fully fit and on form, then I do not think there is much seperating the sides in terms of quality.
I do however believe that Manchester United are still mentally stronger and have more clinical players in the final third. We sometimes lack that player to get the ball out of his feet and smack it hard and low into the bottom corner. Rooney, Ronaldo, Tevez, Scholes, Giggs etc can all do that for them where as I can only really count a select few from our squad.
Arsene may well dip into the transfer market to add to the squad, improve certain areas but I do not think mass surgery is needed like many do after a loss.
The one thing I do believe that we miss is that one player who can turn on that individual brilliance to win a game. Andrey Arshavin has a bit of that in him but he is mainly a very talented team player. The great Thierry Henry was someone who could burst past two defenders, cut inside another and curl it around the keeper. Players like Ronaldo, Messi and Kaka can provide that moment of individual brilliance too.
We are very much a team who relies on team play, if our passing game is interrupted then we can suffer.
I almost forgot.. it is not often you see Arsenal players walking out of clubs drunk, especially with their trousers down. I cannot help but laugh at that. I cannot take that seriously.
Bendtner did come out and apologise for his error of judgement.
“I love this club and was so disappointed to lose against Manchester United last night. Reaching a Champions League Final is one of my biggest dreams and getting knocked out was a massive blow.
“However, no matter how disappointed I was, it does not excuse my behaviour later in the evening. I may be young but my actions were a poor error of judgment and something I deeply regret. I want to apologise to the Club and the fans for letting them and myself down.
“I cannot change the past but will learn from my mistakes. Tuesday night is behind me now and I want to use my energy to fully focus on our three remaining games this season, starting with Chelsea on Sunday.”
Oh dear, I wonder if he will get any punishment from Arsene. He will probably get a fine and a slap on the wrist.
