Kolo Toure only won 44% of his duels in the air. The 67th best in the league (not quite sure if that is broken down by position) so make what you like from that figure
As I write this the Kolo Toure deal is yet to go through, but it seems like a question of when rather than if. Like I mentioned a few days ago, Vermaelen will start the season alongside William Gallas at center back and the pressure will be on the former Ajax captain to bed in quickly and ‘do a Sagna’
In a day where players loyalties are about as thin as Victoria Beckham, it is sad to see one of the old school players leaving the club. It is almost now a completely different squad to the one that last one a trophy in the Arsenal shirt. Squid boy made an interesting point that Djourou and Vermaelen could well be the future once Gallas eventually leaves which could be at the end of his contract next season. I have always liked Djourou even when he first got games under his belt as a 19 year old alongside Senderos.
He has all the tools to be a complete defender. Quick, strong, good in the air and comfortable on the ball. He has already stated that he needs to add the nasty side to his game and not be too nice and I would go along with that. What impressed me last season was his ability to beat opponents in the air, although Toure improved alot when he regained his place, Djourou did not deserve to be dropped from the team.
I read an interesting stat on Sky Sports last night that Kolo Toure only won 44% of his duels in the air. The 67th best in the league (not quite sure if that is broken down by position) so make what you like from that figure but what it didn’t show was the percentage of last ditch tackles or driving runs from the back. We will miss that but hopefully Gallas, Djourou etc can continue that role.
Arseblogger believes that we will not buy another defender to replace him and I would go along with that, if Wenger does buy another central defender then it will be another one for the future.
Hangeland keeps getting linked to us but I honestly believe that it is made up press nonsense somehow turned into fact. You say it often enough and it becomes the truth.
Another name that is not going away is Dutch striker Klass Jan Huntelaar. As far as I know, I do not remember Wenger mentioning his name as a possible target, neither do I remember Real Madrid saying that we had an interest in the player so I ask the question, how have the ‘reporters’ found out about our supposed interest?
I have watched him a handful of times and apart from his superb finishing nothing else has stood out for me. Quick? Technically fantastic? versatile? I would have to say no from what I have seen. Many are stating that he is the fox in the box that we are missing. So what exactly is Eduardo Da Silva? Why have we forgotten about him? Maybe his two goals earlier in the week will slap the letters KJH from their lips.
I almost forgot to mention that we have a game this afternoon at 6pm against Hannover 96. Hopefully the other seniors will be included in the squad. We are yet to see the likes of Cesc, Clichy, Walcott etc.
I am crossing my fingers that we get a chance to see Cesc, Arshavin and Rosicky behind Eduardo for at least 45 minutes for some silky, one touch, creative passing and expert finishing action. It will be interesting to see if Senderos continues his role as defensive midfielder.
Lunch time, enjoy the game and back tomorrow.
