My verdict on squad, Possible transfers & Defence

Defensive midfield we have the mighty Alex Song (so happy to be saying that) and then we have Denilson who can play in that role, albeit slightly differently but after that we have a wealth of attacking, creative central midfielders but no recognised sitters

After my outburst yesterday, I think I should try and bring a calmer vibe around Arsenal Vision today, a nice mellow relaxing feeling wouldn’t go a miss. I shall not talk about the Celtic diving hypocrisy, oh no. I shall not even mention how Rooney went to ground before he was touched and how nothing has been said in a negative fashion. Not me, my friend, today is about peace and love.

In all truth there is not much going on today, well at the time of writing at least. We cannot get hold on Wenger and Gazidis because they are currently sitting in an office somewhere in the Emirates with a massive packet of doughnuts, black coffee and around six mobile phones placed all over the desk along side the Pizza menu’s for later. As you well know it is transfer window closure at 5pm this afternoon, so hold onto your hats guys and girls its gonna get crazy with the amount of new players walking through the Emirates door. That of course is a big fat lie, I think there is more chance of no one coming in and in fact Wenger is tucked up in bed, with his phone on divert enjoying his day off from work.

This is my stance, a stance that I feel I have been pretty consistent with. I feel we could do with one perhaps two additional squad players. We have a good enough first team to win all ahead of us but a few areas could do with an extra padding before we start getting too many players, playing out of position.

Defensive midfield we have the mighty Alex Song (so happy to be saying that) and then we have Denilson who can play in that role, albeit slightly differently but after that we have a wealth of attacking, creative central midfielders but no recognised sitters. Someone who takes on the majority of the donkey work, filling in for Vermaelen and Gallas when they are dragged away by the center forward. If Philippe Senderos stays at the club until at least January then I think we have enough numbers in central defence. So a player in the mould of our Alex who can play defensive midfield as well as center back would be beneficial.

The other area is another goalkeeper who can come in if Almunia suffers injury or is in need of physical or mental rest. Fabianski is currently injured and although is a great talent, I wonder if he is ready for a long shift in the first team.

Apart from that I think we are pretty much all set so if those additions do not come in then we should be able to cope it will just mean that we will have to work that bit harder to make up for the potential loss to any key member of the first team. Going back to big Phil for a second, I was thinking about our new system and how I think it could really benefit him if he is given a chance again. His bad games at Arsenal were usually when he was left exposed by our high line and lack of protection. Wenger has obviously been working on those areas with the squad and Senderos could really do well if he deputised for Vermaelen. There is no longer the big space between our midfield and our defence, we no longer sit off the opposition to allow them to pressure us.

When being reminded of the mistakes that Senderos made during his time at us I shall never forget that massive performance in the Champions League game at Highbury against Real Madrid, he was an absolute mountain that day. A proper old school defender. I hope its wipe the slate clean time for him and he can develop as a very good player, not that I want him playing ahead of Vermaelen or indeed Gallas you understand.

There are rumours surfacing that he could be on his way to Hull. Come on, it cannot be that bad at Arsenal to want to work with Phil bloody Brown. jeez!

Mikel Silvestre has come in for some serious stick, maybe even branch during his short time at Arsenal and some of it understandable judging by his performances at times but I have the feeling that he could be somewhat improved from the version that we witnessed last year. He looked much sharper in pre season and the full pre season training would have helped him, so I won’t shrieking with fear if I see his name on the team sheet just yet.

I have just seen a rumour on the BBC that Carlos Vela could be heading to Fulham on loan which would be good for him to get plenty of football but I think we are going to need him. Especially given the fact that he can play anywhere across the front. I refuse to get any of my collection of knickers in any kind of twist just yet until we have confirmation

One player who doesn’t expect to be wearing the famous red and white shirt is that of Moroccan international Marouane Chamakh.

Chamakh said:

“I am not aware of anything. It would really surprise me if Arsenal made a new offer [before the transfer window closes].

“I am still focused on Bordeaux. It looks like that [staying at Bordeaux] will be the case until the end of the season.”

It would be interesting to see what Wenger would do with a Chamakh, or more importantly what Wenger would do with a Van Persie. But we may never know so, just forget what I was talking about.

Right, I am playing footie tonight so I am happy. Ahhh the little things in life.

Back again tomorrow.
