After reading around the news feed headlines I have come to the conclusion that there is very little to talk about today, nothing worth repeating anyway. A lot of the blogs and comments are a continuation of how not racist Luis Suarez is. Something to do with it being acceptable in different cultures to allegedly say ‘I kicked you because you are black’ but I am not here to bang that drum, the noise of that actually hurt my ears last night so I will say no more on the matter unless he stands next to Arsene with an Arsenal shirt in his hands (which he won’t)
If there is nothing to talk about I usually try and pick a topic on twitter based on conversations between myself and others or between others. To be honest it isn’t really a topic that I wanted to head down because I have been here before but what the heck, I shall try and tweak it a little to come from another angle.
There is a lot of worry about the transfer window so far, worry that we are yet to bring in players to add immediate quality to our squad. Gooners are fretful that time is ticking, players are not bedding in with new team mates before an important season. Don’t get me wrong, I understand this and I also share it, I am not sitting in some superior position of Zen like calm.
All Arsenal fans would have liked to have seen at least a few major faces already in, perhaps on the Asia tour sharing breakfast with Carl Jenkinson, having Podolski hiding their shoe and going sightseeing with Mikel Arteta. I am sure the manager would have wanted this also, although a strong argument could be made for new players staying behind in London to find a house, school and part time job at Sainsbury’s. I would be a fool not to agree that this would have been beneficial.
But dear reader, but.. isn’t this the case for every other team that is yet to empty their registers on the floor? Wouldn’t the rest of the Premier League want to get in players nice and early? If so why has this not been the case for some other big spenders.
Teams such as Swansea have been to work, bringing in new players to their squad so have Norwich but let us be real for a second, these players are not in the bracket of player that we are looking at. Well at least I hope not. Let is look at the higher end of the scale seeing as we are flush with cash now. Which big clubs have been moving and grooving this summer?
Whoever owns Monaco have been consuming too many Smarties and the e numbers have sent them into transfer hyperactivity. They have bought an insane amount of players for inflated fees for the most part. PSG have signed Cavaini. Everyone wanted him or Falcao for that matter who funnily enough went for the ‘project’ I wish my bank account was full of projects I tells ya. Manchester City have also been active haven’t they? Fernandinho, Navas, Negredo will be donning the sky blue shirt. No shouting out, only hands up if you can link those clubs together? You sir at the back? They all have nice projects you say? Hmm, not quite what I was looking for but it will do. The actual answer is that all those clubs do not give a hoot about negotiations and can pay whatever price tag is hoisted above a player they want in their squad as long as they are allowed to do so. My only real surprise is that the Chavs from Fulham are playing a different game this summer even if they have signed Andre Schurrle from German football, a good player yes but not a player that all clubs are fighting over.
Let us look behind us first of all before looking ahead, Tottenham finished below us last season (tell us something we don’t know) and given Arsenal’s new spending power, you would have thought that world class striker they are looking for would have already signed and begun life in the sorry half of North London. They have signed a good defensive minded player to go with Sandro and Parker and company but they want a match winning goalscorer, why the hold up?
Chelsea I have already mentioned, they have also snapped up Mark Schwarzer on a free. ‘But FFS Roman! Why didn’t you buy Cavaini or Falcao? Stop dithering’ Why wait and spend all that money on Rooney who might not even leave Man U when we could have had a world class player already training with us’ That is my best impression of a Chelsea fan on twitter’ I imagine that it how it goes.
Here is my attempt at being a Man U fan, here goes. ‘Moyes is out of his depth, I knew we should have gone for a bigger name manager. Those blue see you next Tuesday’s have already spent big, to take the title off us and we’ve done nothing. Lost out on Thiago when we should have been more decisive. I bet we mess up the Cesc deal and he goes to Arsenal or something. Everyone knows we need a midfielder, Scholes has gone and yet we dither’
The argument against this on twitter this morning was that Man U won the league last season but this has very little to do with it. It is all relative. They will feel that standing still will allow others to win the league where as the fear amongst Arsenal fans is that if we do not strength then we cannot challenge but the need for quality additions is essentially the same for everyone.
I was misunderstood on twitter, I was not suggesting that AFC should be relaxing putting our feet up and not paying much attention to the market, not at all. My point is that lack of movement is not just happening at Arsenal and because of this I am inclined to think that there is a reason for the lack of movement from so many sides and there is no reason just yet to criticise the club so far or that no new players will come in.
When all the players who are seeking moves have moved clubs and Arsenal are not the chosen destination then let us have a fully grown moan fest, I’ll host it at my place, you just bring along drinks and snacks.
Nothing much to talk about today. Bacary has committed himself for this season which is nice. I’m glad it has turned out this way even if he disappears on a free next season. Another sign of the changing times. Pre new commercial deals we would avoid allowing players walking out on a free by selling. The need to recoup is no longer there and it should be the case going forward.
Another player who will not be playing at Arsenal next season is Andre Santos. From what I’ve read his new club paid 50% while Santos paid the other 50% of his contract to buy himself out. It didn’t work out for him in his second season but he seemed a very likable chap.
And lastly some speculation for you. We have agreed a deal for Brazilian young talent Bernard who is a very talented player by all accounts. Not sure I will take it seriously though until something more substantial comes about.
’till the next time
