Arsenal shouldn’t be afraid of 10th place Roma / Will Wenger spend?

Without wanting to hype an already over hyped 16 year old, I think there is a good chance we can witness the best English player ever to play for Arsenal in the years to come (should he stay long term that is)

Wow, plenty of stuff to get through today so I shall get stuck right in.

So AS Roma in the last 16. It is a draw that I am pleased with, it is a draw that I think we can win. We have done pretty well against Italian sides under Arsene Wenger. Roma only have 23 points after 15 games and are stuck in 10th place in Serie A.

Julio Baptista will come back to the Emirates with a point to prove. Chelsea did suffer at the hands of Roma earlier so we have to be careful.

So to everyone’s favourite topic, transfers.

Arsene Wenger came out and spoke about the possibility of making a January signing but I think people are slightly choosing what they want to hear.

Wenger said:

“I cannot say something will happen, but you never know,” the Frenchman told Arsenal TV Online. “It is feasible that we can do it and sometimes a [new] player can give some extra belief to the squad.

“If it appears we can make something special, then we will do it – but at the moment I can sincerely say we have not seen anything special that can really convince us we will be much stronger.

“At the moment, I am more [keen] to develop the team we have. When you look at our players, most of them are under 21 and there is a lot to come from them.”

We have heard the if there is a super super player then we will take it line before and nothing has come about so lets not count our chickens just yet. Wenger did emphasise his need to develop the team that he already has.

January is not usually a period where he likes to spend money, he would rather do it in the summer, give them his pre season get the player working with the players and prepare for the coming season. In January the player is thrown in usually into a country that he doesn’t know and a style of play that takes time to adjust to.

However, I totally agree that a new player can give a spark to the others and create a positive influence around the club, especially if the player is talented with the potential to make an immediate impact.

Wenger went on to say:

“We have gone with a policy we respect and the solution is not always when you do not get the result you want to just go out and buy. That can destroy what you have built up until now,” he explained.

“We do not reject it, but we cannot also say that for certain it will be done. We have a young team with the Club in good shape, a healthy financial position, which suddenly is quite important.

“That is why what you want with a young team is for your fans to be behind [the team] and give them something extra that a team needs.”

Interesting that Arsene keeps stating that the fans should be backing their own team, It could well be part of the inconsistency. The trouble is that if Arsene does not make any signings in January there will be an outcry from fans.

I personally think that we need two players, a wide player and another central midfielder but if Arsene decides that there is not the correct personnel then I back his judgement over mine.

Fans have been crying out for more experience in the side but my opinion is that we don’t necessarily need experience we just need additional quality. Give me two 21 year olds who can dribble past players, and score goals and another who can run around pass the ball well along with break up the opposition and I will be happy.

Lets just hope that there are the right players with a shiny ‘come and get me Arsene’ tags stuck to their foreheads.

Danny Fiszman has confirmed that Arsene has money to spend in January as always.

Fiszman said:

“There are some funds available if he wishes to spend but, as always, the decision is his,” Fiszman told Sky Sports News.

Interesting comparisons between Jack Wilshere and Dennis Bergkamp from the manager.

“I believe he will end up a central midfielder, just off the striker in the Bergkamp role,” Wenger declared.

“I am convinced he will have a tremendous penetrative power and we forget that the boy is only 16 and already has so much power, you give him four more years and he will be massively strong.

“He can find the final ball and can also score goals. He is passionate and committed guy, he is not afraid of tackles and you want this type of player to finish off central.”

The kid seems to create so many chances whenever I watch him play. The reverse pass has already become his trademark so far this season. A central position is where you want Jack, he needs the ball as much as possible and floating behind a striker would be ideal for him.

He is different to Dennis Bergkamp but with the same kind of vision and execution of pass (well potential execution) I dare say that Wilshere potentially has more to his game than Dennis had. Bergkamp couldn’t dribble past 4 players at anytime throughout his career but Wilshere has the ability to do that and open spaces that only a direct dribbler can.

Without wanting to hype an already over hyped 16 year old, I think there is a good chance we can witness the best English player ever to play for Arsenal in the years to come (should he stay long term that is)

Speaking of young Englishmen, Theo Walcott who we are currently missing through injury is a believer of the young Arsenal squad and he says that the club can win silverware.

“There are brilliant, fantastic, world-class young players at this club. Results like Chelsea and Manchester United were superb, so we just need to overcome the smaller clubs as well. Which we will,” the England international told the Daily Express.

“Obviously many players are still learning as well. We gained such a lot of experience last year, only four points off first position.

“We just have to look back at that season, look how well we’ve done and we deserve to be there.

“We’ve got to have belief in ourselves and we’ll do it.”

I am not sure about the whole belief in ourselves will win us trophies angle. Without belief it would be very difficult to beat Manchester United and Chelsea. A bit more fight from the players against 95% of the league would do.

How we could do with a fit Theo Walcott right now. Our wide areas are looking fairly bear at present, especially with new summer signing Sami Nasri consistently injured at the moment. He will be back in the side against Liverpool which is great news.

Tomas Rosicky is back in training for light work which is a massive positive. I pray for no more set backs for the hugely talented midfielder.

Wenger said that he will not be back before March, does he mean should be available to play of just available to play reserve matches and gain fitness and sharpness. March to the end of the season isn’t a long time and it would be nice to have a player of Rosicky’s caliber for the run in, I still have faith that we will be involved in the run in.

I suppose it is too early to talk about Rosicky’s come back into the first team, especially after so many set backs.

I do believe that if we had a first choice midfield (Rosicky Cesc Denilson Nasri/Walcott) for most of the games then we would be in a much healthier position at the present time.

Lady Nina Bracewell-Smith (LNBS from now on) has had her say on the events that have taken place lately in the boardroom.

Bracewell-Smith told the Daily Mail:

“I’m in total shock and very upset about the appalling way I have been treated.

“The board have no manners whatsoever and my views were ignored on many occasions.

“I can’t understand why I have been removed in such a ruthless fashion.”

“I have also had no proper explanation as to why they wanted me out so much.

“It is very difficult to accept, especially after what my family has done for Arsenal for so many years.

“I am extremely upset at what’s happened and the way it has been done.”

Something must have happened behind the scenes for the board to cut her out like that, from her comments she sounds surprised by what happened so it would be nice to hear the full story.

Like I said yesterday, this one is sure to rumble on a little while.

It is Friday so let your hair down and enjoy the weekend. Pre Liverpool thoughts and predictions tomorrow at some point.
