Ahead of the big clash on Sunday, Tony from from AnfieldRed, a Liverpool FC news blog with Liverpool FC news has very kindly answered some questions from myself.
Here they are.
Liverpool have dropped a little in recent seasons, who in your opinion is to blame and why?
It is down to Tom Hicks and George Gillette – they plunged the club into debt meaning we had to sell to buy, we lost key players (everyone harps on about Alonso and rightly so) but we also lost the likes of Hyypia & Arbeloa who were solid defenders, along with Crouch and Riera who were good attacking options. Under Benitez we had one bad season, then Hodgson came in and set us back even further – his tactics, style of play and management just didn’t work here.
Kenny has turned it around, but we’re still off the pace because of the awful performances we put in earlier in the season under Hodgson.
There seems to be a split with Arsenal fans about our squad and manager. From an outsiders perspective, what state do you see Arsenal in at the moment?
There’s no doubting what Wenger has done for the club – the season where Arsenal were unbeaten was unreal, I just don’t think they’ve replaced Henry since. It is always quality watching Arsenal because you know there’s going to be slick, fast attacking, great passes and no ‘anti football’ long hoofs up field.
If you had a striker even half as good as Henry, Arsenal would have won the league easily this year – Van Persie has great technique and pops up with the odd stunner, but there doesn’t seem to be anyone to just rip players the way Henry used to. Everyone wants you to win the league this year as no one wants to see Utd win it again, but I really only think Arsenal need a good keeper and a couple of strikers. At right back you’ve got Sagna and Eboue, left back you have Clichy and Gibbs, your midfield is full of class players like Fabregas, Diaby, Wilshere and Arshavin, but Bendtner is nowhere near good enough to be on the same teamsheet as those guys.
If you got rid of Wenger, you’d have someone else come in who wants to make their mark, revamp the academy, training sessions, coaching staff, the lot – it could set you back a few years rather than progressing.
Which Liverpool player has impressed you the most so far this season?
Lucas has gone up in many fan’s estimations as he has knuckled down, got stuck in and kept going, and started playing better as a result, although Raul Meireles has flourished under Dalglish so I’d have to say him.
If you could have one Arsenal player to boost the Liverpool squad, which player would you choose?
Arshavin, without a doubt. How he doesn’t get a game all the time is beyond me – when he scored 4 at Anfield that night he was unbelievable, and humble about it at the end. He’s tricky and can beat players, scores great goals, and can play anywhere across the front line; so would love to see him in a Liverpool shirt. Plus, the Q&A sessions on his website are hilarious, his answers are funny, you can’t tell if he’s being sarcastic or just stupid.
Is Kenny Daglish the right man to take the reigns on a permanent basis?
Based on the last few months I’d say yes; there’s such as buzz around the club again now which we haven’t had since the 08/09 season where we only lost twice, and on your way to the game you knew you were going to see a good performance. Roy’s dire tactics drained alot of support away from the club, and the results on the pitch have shown that he wasn’t the right man.
Kenny has united the players and fans, isn’t bowing to pressure/daft questions from the media, and is also not taking his position for granted. If the owners are unsure that he can do it, give him a full season and let him show what he can do. Him and Steve Clarke have got us playing better, tighter at the back, and attacking again, so that can only be a good thing.
Are you feeling confident ahead of the weekend game
Had you asked me before the City game I would have said not very, but after watching that then I’d have to say we have a chance of getting a result – I know teams don’t go to Arsenal and win easily, and we won’t see as much of the ball as we would against other teams, but if we play like we did in the first half against City then we have a chance of getting a result there.
How do you feel Liverpool can cause Arsenal problems and why?
Suarez and Carroll will be the obvious dangers, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Kuyt pop up with a goal. Regardless of what is said about his first touch/pace etc, he always scores important goals, and never gives up. We don’t tend to score from set pieces that often, so I’d say that if we do score it will be a header from Carroll or a tap in from Dirk, with Suarez assisting.
Suarez has been a breathe of fresh air, he’s always looking to beat a man and get in a good position, and if he loses it he’s tracking back until we have possession again. We got overrun by Man City at Eastlands in midfield, because our shape wasn’t right, and if the likes of Diaby & Fabregas are on form then we’ll have a game on our hands.
What are you predictions ahead of the game?
I’d like to say a Liverpool win, but can see it being a draw. 1-1, with Kuyt and Diaby getting the goals
Any final thoughts ahead of the game?
We’ve seen some great games between Liverpool and Arsenal in recent years (the 4-4 game, and the champions league tie a few years ago spring to mind), and on the back of the Man City result I’m expecting another good match.

Thank you for your time and answers and may the best team win on Sunday.
