Good afternoon all you fellow Gooners out there, thank you for reading.
Sometimes I cannot believe that I waffle nearly everyday and it is read by thousands of Gooners each day, quite strange I must say, especially given the fact that I started this site because I had so much stuff swimming around my head about the Arsenal and my girlfriend was fed up of listening to stuff that she had no idea about.
Anyway, it appears that many are in disagreement with my views about our current situation, there seems to be a clear divide between our supporters about the current state we find ourselves in.
When I finally sat down to read through the comments late last night, I kicked myself because the debate was very interesting and I was unable to get involved. Often I am unable to read through or respond until late due to work and the real work of three kids at home but I will try and respond if a question is addressed to myself, even if it is after everyone is tucked up in bed.
It doesn’t seem like that divide will change, each have their feelings and we should expect that. What we can both agree on is that we need to improve in certain areas and win trophies for this squad because if we continue not to pick up trophies then we run the risk of losing key individuals and then the rebuilding cycle starts going round again and none of us want that.
Arsene Wenger will be asking questions from shareholders today which should be very interesting. Last year Arsene was confronted by some frustrated fans and they were not shy to express themselves so I cannot imagine what he will have to face this time round. I always find it interesting listening to what he has to say. Arsene should be a politician, he always manages to say the right things at the right time.
CEO Ivan Gazidis also seems to have that charm when put in front of a microphone and he had a few things to say about Arsene and the club.
Gazi said:
He is not closed-minded, The idea that Arsène Wenger is some stubborn guy who is not open to having his ideas challenged and there is nobody there who can say ‘listen we need someone with experience in the middle of the park or at the back’ just isn’t true.
“He is asking questions of himself all the time and talking to people all the time. He does not believe he has all the answers and I see that as one of his strengths. He is not someone who takes the easy route to protect himself. He will place the protection of his players above that.’
“He is not going to go out and say ‘this guy is not good enough’ or ‘this is where we are weak’. He has the ability to make difficult decisions when they have to be made, but until then, he protects and supports the players he has.”
It seems that many have already decided that Wenger listens nobody and many have followed that without knowing what Wenger is like personally. Everybody has their own views so everyone thinks that they are right, using the current club situation as an example. If Arsene Wenger was just some dude called Adam Wibbles who played nice football but had never won a trophy then yes I would be more concerned, but that is far from the case, in the past or not he is someone who has been successful and won doubles at our club. Believe it or not he has build a defence that went a whole league season unbeaten. Not bad for a stubborn guy or knows nothing about defending.
Arsene Wenger will be judged for his work in 2008-2009 and he will have to face the music.
Continuing with Gazidis’ comments, I have to print his view of our season, I could not have found another opinion which could be closer to the way I feel.
“I am not happy where we ended up but I am pleased we are disappointed by it, There are other clubs who would feel this is a good position. Or we could say in December if someone had said we’d have been in this position then we would have bitten their hands off.’
“So why aren’t we feeling great about it? The answer is because we have higher expectations. But this is not a situation where we should be over-reactive and feel that we are in crisis. We are not. We have a team with an average age of 23 or 24 that went to the Champions League Semi-Finals and is going to get better.
“Does it need to be supplemented? Quite possibly but it is a very, very promising situation for the next four or five years.
“So right now I think it is important to have some perspective and be brutally realistic with ourselves – but not only on the negative side but the positive side as well.”
*I stand and clap* ok, maybe just in my head but that is pretty much spot on. We could and perhaps should have done better this season, especially our league campaign but isn’t it a good thing that most of our squad are only going to get better? But hey, lets not go there again.
I’ll tell you what I am looking forward to next season, that is the partnership between Andrey Arshavin and Eduardo da Silva. Even if those two were not in form and we played the way we did for the first 20 minutes against Chelsea then we would have been way out of sight. I am excited to see how the team will be restructured to fit in key players as well as correct the balance.
Wenger will sign at least two players, certainly not less especially with the African cup of nations which will see a big chunk of our side out.
I suppose we have all summer to talk about that so I will keep it short for now.
Pizza for lunch, yummy. Have a good one.
