Sami Nasri out on the left didn’t have just best game in an Arsenal shirt but he kept everything relatively safe with his passing and link up with Clichy. His injuries have disrupted his progress so far and we are witnessing this
What a nice footballing weekend that was for Arsenal football club. It is a shame that Tottenham ruined it for us but it doesn’t really matter about them right now, we’ll concentrate on that later.
Early afternoon saw the top 2 (currently) take on eachother at Stamford bridge. One thing I found fascinating was the lack of quality on the Chelsea bench. Well, lack of.
I know they have a nice juicy list of injuries that would make even our physio jealous but you would expect a club that have spend such ridiculous amounts of money on players to have a little more depth about them. For starters they have 3 first team strikers and one of those are Salomon Kalou. Then behind them they have a young reserve that I know very little of.
It was a pretty evenly contested match with both teams having chances but neither of them particularly impressed me. Alonso who could have been an Arsenal player had Liverpool dropped their asking price scored a deflected goal, something Lampard looked over with green eyes and hit the post with a curling freekick.
I wondered if Chelsea would get their customary equaliser but it never came, Gashley Cock had a chance to equalise late on but blazed over and wide. My word, his stock has fallen since he left Arsenal.
With Manchester United only managing to pick up a point against Everton at Goodison the pressure was on Arsenal to grab all three points and wrestle some of those missed points against Fulham, Hull and Sunderland back.
I said in my pre match My Vision that it would be hard to predict the team as Arsene would be resting a few bodies and he did partner Bendtner with Van Persie and he drafted in Gallas alongside Silvestre like predicted but the midfield was different to what I thought it would be. Alex Song came in for Denilson who was left out of the squad, not sure if that was for injury reasons or just rest.
Nasri continued on the left wing with Theo on the right.
I was interested to see what the Cesc and Song partnership would provide and I must say I was impressed. Defensively Song played the role very well, he showed good touches in parts during the game as well, although he did give the ball away a few times when he could have done better but that is something that will probably get better over games.
Theo Walcott looked dangerous in parts but it seems like his new confidence is his downfall at times as well. He had good chances to find other players at times during the game but opted to go alone, especially when he could have squared the ball to Bendtner to tap in but he went alone and clipped the crossbar. Having said this, Ronaldo scored 40 goals by being selfish and Manchester United won the Premier League and Champions League so it cannot be just a negative.
Sami Nasri out on the left didn’t have just best game in an Arsenal shirt but he kept everything relatively safe with his passing and link up with Clichy. His injuries have disrupted his progress so far and we are witnessing this. In Fenerbache he wasn’t at his very best either but done things simple. I want to see match winning performances from Nasri, I want him to grab the game by the scruff of the neck and create regular chances and score consistent goals from the flank. This will happen if he can avoid niggles and set backs.
Like the Gallas and Toure partnership. I do not think that Bendtner and Van Persie compliment each other that well. Both are drop off forward players and Bendtner had to take up the role of leading striker. Adebayor came off the bench and improved both of them. Van Persie was much more influential from the right where he could come in and shoot, which is what he does best. Ade was very influential in the first goal and finished off the second following an exquisite Bendtner pass.
Almunia was again in fine form and saved fantastically from Bellamy earlier in the game. The Welshman was clearly very rusty.
William Gallas also had a much immproved game, was it his rest of his partner? Its difficult to tell. Arsene will have tough choices ahead of the Spurs game with Toure on the bench.
Arsene has reminded everyone that the title is still a long way away and we are very much involved in things to come.
“One week ago everyone made Chelsea super-favourites, now it is Liverpool,” he said.
“Things change very quickly, which is why it makes it very interesting.
“We were very close last year and with 83 points, many times you would have been champions.
“However, Manchester United had a fantastic second half of the season, we dropped a little bit of our quality and that is it – I still feel any weakness will be punished.”
We have been ruled out the race by many of our own fans but we are still ahead of the former Champions. The matches against the rivals are going to be interesting. Next up is the derby against the Spuds who physiologically will be much improved. I am just happy that we are playing them at home because going to White Hart Lane after Harry Redknapp and three points in their bag could have been a potential banana skin.
Right, must go, have a good afternoon.
