Biggest Football Sponsorship Deals in the History of the Game

Manchester City has made many football records. Recently, the club added one more feather to its cap by inking a $642.2m (£ 400m) deal with Etihad Airways. The biggest football deal ever in the history of the game has shaken some rival clubs for sure and left them green with envy. Not only that, it has also upped Man U’s odds at UK online casinos.

Here’s looking at some of the other top deals in the European football scene that made an equal if not bigger noise when they were finalized:

1. Manchester United and Nike

Over the 13 years of its existence, this sporting deal has seen some $486 million (£ 312m) change hands. In 2002, Nike sidelined Umbro as ManU’s kit provider and took over the team’s global licensing and retail operations as well.

2. Juventus and Tamoil

This deal was signed in 2005 and should have been renewable for ten years up till 2015. The Libyan oil company backed out of the deal when Juventus’ reputation hit pay dirt, but before that happened the $265m (£ 270m) deal made history as the second most expensive football sponsorship deal.

3. Barca and the Qatar Foundation

The shirt sponsorship deal between the Spanish club and the Qatar Foundation was reportedly signed for $235m (£ 151m). Though the Qatar Foundation is known for its charitable works such as promoting education and research in the Middle East, many felt that Barca’s decision to put a logo on their shirts when they had refused to do so for long was just short of a disgrace.

4. Barcelona and Nike

The sports equipment brand also signed a deal with Barca for a shirt sponsorship. Though the club had tried to keep away from branding gimmicks for a long time, it finally did succumb to the pressure and the $189m (£ 171m) deal – plus bonuses and royalties – was just too exciting to be turned down.

5. Chelsea and Adidas

Roman Abramovich’s London team has a $160m (£ 400m) deal with Adidas. In 2008, the club also renewed its long standing deal with Korean tech company Samsung marking its place in the moneyed clubs in European football.

We think the next biggest deal will come from a gambling company. The evidence is their that online casinos and bookmakers are very keen on getting their brands plastered on the shirts of top rated teams. We have already seen Bet365, Bet188, 888 Casino and many other small operators dip their toes into football sponsorships.

Football is definitely one of the biggest sports in UK to place best on. With casinos that offer mobile casino platforms and download software, players can now keep track of the games and the latest buzz and place their bets accordingly.

A quick search on the net for online casino reviews will give you a heads up as to which sites are the best ones to wager your money at.
