I can imagine Nicklas Bendtner waving frantically in the background doing his best to get Cesc’s attention. Bendtner is certainly a different type of forward to the one’s we have currently available. It shouldn’t be much longer until he is available
And hello once again to you Gooners around the globe, how is life treating you today? I am fine, pretty excited about the upcoming matches. We do not have many Champions League matches at this stage where we can throw our legs up on the stool and lean back into our sofa and watch the game without our hearts pumping.
I hope the atmosphere tomorrow will be red hot and the home team provide plenty of intimidating noise. I would imagine that the kids would have never come across such an atmosphere in their short careers.
More on that one tomorrow morning in the usual match thoughts and predictions.
In other news Cesc Fabregas has been speaking about the lack of options in our attacking play and he thinks that a player like Drogba could make all the difference.
Cesc said:
“Throughout the game (against City) we had a lot of possession but didn’t really have anyone to go in behind the defenders, apart from Carlos Vela.
“We had a lot of similar players who like the ball into their feet. Sometimes it’s true that you need a different kind of option.”
I can imagine Nicklas Bendtner waving frantically in the background doing his best to get Cesc’s attention. Bendtner is certainly a different type of forward to the one’s we have currently available. It shouldn’t be much longer until he is available and given a run in the side I think he could show his qualities. We do not have many in our squad who are hungry to win the aerial battle just as Vermaelen is at the back and the Dane is one of those players. His link play is pretty good also, I am just unsure about his hold up play. He seems more suited to a withdrawn forward role so it would be interesting to see how he would adjust just as Van Persie had to at the beginning of the season.
Cesc speaking about the Chelsea defeat, said:
Overall, I saw a Chelsea team that was normal but a team that has probably the best striker in the world.
“An average team that has the best striker in the world can always do something and Didier Drogba makes all the difference.”
Personally I have never really rated Drogba in the same bracket as many have. To me, he is a big powerful forward who has benefited from the players around him. But give him credit he has often turned it on, on the big stage, when it really matters, Didier Drogba stands up to be counted. Technially he is nothing special, not even an exceptional finisher. Having said that, I have had enough of the guy inflicting pain to our team time and time again.
I would love to see Andrey Arshavin playing at center forward against Liverpool, I am sure he could cause them a few problems and could love Anfield to be a happy hunting ground for him. I’d take an Anfield brace right now, wouldn’t you? No one could call me greedy, I am only asking for half of last season, that is fair enough.
Thomas Vermaelen believes that Arshavin can take that role and do a good job.
Vermaelen said:
“Robin is a very good striker and we’ll miss him a lot, But we have other strikers with enough quality to play there.”
The Belgian highlighted the qualities that made Arshavin so effective filling in up front. He’s quick and he scored a good goal today,”
“He’s putting the runs in behind the defenders. We play passing football and we can put the ball in behind the defenders.”
Movement and speed is such a lethal combination and I am pretty surprised that he doesn’t see the position as one that suits him. I know I am judging this by one home performance against Stoke but I think it could be a position that suits him more than any other.
Arshavin can get into the game more often from that position and has the ability to pick out runners from midfield as well as getting in behind himself. Anyway, he may not even be played in that role again so I will just wait and see what happens to our players before Sunday.
Right, have to disappear. Back tomorrow.
