Theo Walcott was very dangerous once again down the right. I think he along with Nasri on their games are the most exciting Arsenal players in the first team squad
Morning Gooners, feel better today?
To be honest, Squid boy has said everything that I wanted to in his Match Report this morning, so I won’t go into long details about the game, but here are some observations.
Like every Arsenal match I watch these days I look at the attitude of the players in the first 5 minutes and you can see that it was right, once it is right then we have a chance against anyone.
We lined up with arguably our strongest team possible depending on preference. Nasri was back on the left and like the beginning of the season he slotted in without any signs of lacking sharpness or rustiness. He wasn’t a massive influence, probably because it is his first game back but even when he is not at his best he does all the jobs on the left correctly and effortlessly.
What I found most enjoyable about the game was the return to form of Cesc Fabregas. He was orchestrating and dictating back to his usual high standard. I noticed the midfield adjustment against Hull with Denilson playing deeper in midfield with Cesc pushed further forward this was once again apparent last night.
Theo Walcott was very dangerous once again down the right. I think he along with Nasri on their games are the most exciting Arsenal players in the first team squad. Walcott should get better and have more of an influence the better Cesc gets. Ljungberg wasn’t the same without Bergkamp and it could well be similar with relationship with Fab and Feo.
Once again the back four looked anything but secure, especially early in the first half. Porto could or should have scored on at least 2 occasions. I am wondering if anything can actually be done to solve these issues. Obviously the ariel issue can be addressed but our overall defensive frailties cannot totally be addressed unless the rest of our game is sacrificed.
Lets say for arguments sake that Manchester United and Chelsea have the best defence in the league. Take either Terry and Ferdinand or Vidic and Carvalho and leave them on the half way line with Clichy and Sagna pushed up do you think they will stop more than Toure and Gallas on the deck? I don’t think they would. We still have the set piece issue to deal with but one defender cannot stop everything that comes into the box. There needs to be more aggression in the air from the whole squad. Van Persie is not a short player, Adebayor should be dominating in the box at both ends the way Drogba is for Chelsea.
I suppose the question is, are Toure and Gallas the scapegoats for a lack of height from the whole team? Or are they the real problems. I think the answer is a bit of both.
Arsene seemed pretty happy about the performance after the game.
“It’s always important that straight away you come back with a good performance,” Wenger told ITV1.
“It’s a convincing win and that’s what we wanted to do.
“It’s very important to respond quickly and that’s what we did.”
So next up is Sunderland, lets hope the players have learnt their lesson for the second and final time.
Okie dokey, lunch time, Have a good day. Don’t forget to leave your comment.
