Cash-strapped, debt-ridden, relegation-threatened selling club Arsenal suffered yet another blow in their summer of turmoil after conceding two late goals in their pre-season friendly against Burgenland XI last night.
Junuz Foric grabbed the first for the home side with about 20 minutes to go and then wrapped up the scoring with a nicely taken second just before the final whistle.
The result was just what under fire boss Arsene Wenger did not need at this crucial stage of July. The ten goals his side put away beforehand offered little in the way of consolation.
Wantaway midfielder Jack Wilshire scored the first allowing the travelling support to breathe a collective sigh of relief having sat through a nail-biting 57 seconds when it seemed Burgenland would run riot. There was some confusion as to whether it was Wilshire or Aaron Ramsey who put the ball in the net. When it was credited to the 16 year old, Ramsey responded by demanding a pay rise and thus plunging the club further into the mire.
Burgenland were dictating the play. It was real men against boys stuff. The home side were indifferent to Arsenal’s tactic of scoring goals as some futile way of imposing themselves on the game. Bendtner’s four goal haul and Vela’s braces gave the gunners a slim seven goal advantage going into the break.
At this point I decided to go and play five aside. Disgusted by as poor a performance I’ve ever seen from an Arsenal side.
From what i’ve read on the forums since I got home, it seems that Arsene Wenger, in trying to protect his side’s slender advantage withdrew Bendtner from the game at half time. The Dane was understandably furious and has apparently demanded a move to Hertha Berlin.
Then, in a clear act which demonstrated that Arsene Wenger has no idea what he is doing, he allowed his team to continue to attack rather than try and sit on their slender lead. The fact Arsenal only managed three more goals in the second half is testament to how much Wenger has lost it.
The stage was then set for Foric to break Arsenal hearts with his late double. I’ve been told fans were streaming out of the ground in their dozens. The few that remained apparently booed the team off at full time. So disheartened was Theo Walcott, that the young winger slapped Wenger with a transfer request, literally! Disgraceful stuff which will surely see the club banned from all competitions next season.
The only thing to gauge from such a lacklustre display is that Arsenal have NO squad and Spurs WILL finish in the top four!
Cesc Fabregas’ absence was duly noted. In fact, he hasn’t even been to training yet this pre-season. A clear indictor he’s on the verge of signing for Real Madrid.
Naturally, the blogs and forums have been going crazy. Here are a few select quotes: “It was all Gallas’ fault. If he never had that strop against Birmingham, there’s no way we would have conceded twice tonight. Sell him and make Gavin Hoyte the armband. He’s ready!” IH8WILLYG_1992
“Not good enough. 10 goals? That’s one goal every nine minutes. If we are to compete with ManU and Chelski we need to double that ratio” – TLKSPRT_FAN
“2 GOALS! U LOT R BLIND! U CANT SEE DIS TEAM IZ NOT GD ENUFF! WE KEEP BUYIN 2 MANY KIDS N WE ALWAZ LET IN 2 MANY GOALS!! IF WE BUY MESSI, BEZEMA N PATO! WE’LL SOLVE BOTH PROBS!” – Cuthbert Huntley-Smith III, Windsor
“I’ve been telling people how long I’ve been supporting Arsenal for 40 years and I’ve never seen a worse game than today. Sack the board” – Bill
“Wenger has lost it. Time for a change. Yeah, so what if he won the double in his first full season, so what if he was able to do it again in 2002, so what if the team went unbeaten, so what if he managed top 2 finishes 8 seasons on the trot, so what if he was just 14 minutes from winning Arsenal’s first ever Champions league, so what if he revolutionised coaching methods and produced a style of football that others can only look upon in awe, so what if he works miracles in the transfer market with a budget nowhere near that of his rivals, so what if he continues to educate and nurture young players producing some of the most exciting players in the country, so what if he’s responsible for turning a side on the brink of mediocrity playing in an aging stadium into one of the most feared sides in Europe who now reside at one of the world’s best sporting arenas, he is… erm… I forgot what point I was making” – HillierThanThou
“LOL! Would the last rat please turn the light out on the sinking ship. You’re a spent force of your former shadow. Your sell by date has expired. Even your own manger admitted that during the transfer window he buys and SELLS players. Selling club. When Ronaldo goes Madrid. You’ll be f*cked. Ha ha. One man team! And you will know my name is the lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee!” – N.E. Spursfan
