Diaby searches for missing elements to hold down Gunners place

I think the fact that he is sacrificing his holiday to get ready for the season speaks volumes. As much as his performances can make you feel frustrated I have no doubts that he could be a major player for Arsenal if given the chance

For some reason at Arsenal we have so many players to divide opinion amongst the Gooner faithful. Abou Diaby is certainly one of those players. Leggy, powerful and talented but injury prone and inconsistent, Abou Diaby has gone from the new Patrick Vieira to a squad liability in some fans eyes but Abou Diaby is now determined to show his quality to the Premier League.

Diaby has now turned to French trainer Renaud Longuevre in order to get stronger for the new season.

“When I feel that a sportsman is ready to give it all in order to reach a stage, it suits me,” Longuevre told Les Dessous du Sport.

“He is motivated and wants to reach the next stage on the physical level. The English league is very demanding; as a consequence his objective is to improve physically in order to be stronger and more resistant. He wants to be stronger in challenges. That is why he needs more muscle power.”

I think the fact that he is sacrificing his holiday to get ready for the season speaks volumes. As much as his performances can make you feel frustrated I have no doubts that he could be a major player for Arsenal if given the chance. When I say chance, I mean a run of consecutive matches without injury.

We cannot overlook the fact that Abou Diaby has never had a long stretch in the first team to iron out any fitness, sharpness or team mate understanding problems. I believe that most players need this when given a chance. Only a few footballers such as Cesc can be thrown into a match at that level as a young player and just take to it like a duck to water without teething problems.

The issue with him is where to play him and who to partner him with. Abou Diaby would be best playing alongside a more defensive player which would allow Diaby to play box to box, obviously with someone like Cesc Fabregas it makes it more difficult for Diaby to fit in. Should Arsene alter the formation next season to a 4-3-3 or a 4-2-3-1 then a place in the team could be possible.

I expect many readers to disagree with me but I find it difficult to believe that a player with so much talent can not correct the basics.

In other news Nicklas Bendtner’s father has come out and dismissed any possible move to Roma.

“There is absolutely nothing to the rumour about Roma,” Thomas Bendtner told Sporten.dk.

“Nicklas is happy at Arsenal, and the trip to Rome has been planned for a long time, just like his other summer plans.”

I wasn’t even aware of a link to Roma. Bendtner could have a big year coming up. I am not quite sure if he is quite at the level where we should be looking at the Dane as first choice but he is certainly a player who can make an impact coming off the bench or coming into the team when the likes of Van Persie, Adebayor and Eduardo need breathers.

Andrey Arshavin has said that he would like to end is career at his former club Zenit St Petersburg.

Arshavin said:

“I played for Zenit for a long time and now I want to play abroad and then return to St Petersburg to finish off my career there,” he told Radio Zenit

I could have sworn that a few weeks ago his said that he could see himself finishing his career at Arsenal, not that it matters much these days. Situations change on almost a weekly basis in the life of a Premier League footballer.

As long as it is when he is 35 and no longer capable of playing at our level when Jack Wilshere had been crowned world player of the year for the 3rd year running then that will be just fine.

I still look forward to watching Jack in our strongest team in a central attacking role in a one off game, perhaps pre season. I do like pre season, get to watch new combinations, new experiments that you do not get to see during the season.

I have just noticed something very weird and creepy. There is no speculation about us buying any players today. What is going on? Hacks day off perhaps? I have no idea.

ok dokie, that’s about the size of it today, I would like to say back with something more substantial tomorrow but who knows. Van Persie making progress with a new contract would be all the news we need.
