Does midfield problem force Arsene into transfer window? & The Sol Dilemma

>Either Wenger has to tinker with the players he has, possibly reverting either Diaby or Ramsey into a position that isn’t totally natural for their game or he attempts to bring someone into the squad as cover

I was confident that we would beat Everton yesterday but I did have a concern about the lack of football that the players had played together since we beat Portsmouth at Fratton park. In the end it certainly felt like a point gained rather than two points dropped. I don’t think I have seen an away side put so much into a game as Everton put in yesterday. It looks like the secret in getting a result at the Emirates is to drink 2 cases of red bull each. Well that is how it looked.

Our midfield was ripped in half with Cesc Fabregas and Alex Song missing from the line up so it was always going to be difficult to adapt quickly. We never quite found our rhythm throughout the game. I believe that had the Bolton game gone ahead then we would have played much better than we did in the game yesterday. If you would like to read my take on the game then just click here.

So far there is no indication as to how long Denilson will be missing from the squad, Arsene didn’t appear to be too concerned about it during his post match talk. He said that our little Brazilian was walking without too much discomfort which can only bode well, with Arsene expressing that he didn’t feel our African players should come back early, it leaves a little short term issue to be resolved in midfield.

Either Wenger has to tinker with the players he has, possibly reverting either Diaby or Ramsey into a position that isn’t totally natural for their game or he attempts to bring someone into the squad as cover. but then the question is, how long does this cover last for? How many players can you have for only one position? Alex Song could come back and go the whole season without injury (yeah I know, just forget he plays for Arsenal for a moment) now Mr X is now a bit part squad player who is looking for the next Carling Cup game before he gets a chance to show his worth. Wenger will have Craig Eastmond and Francis Coquelin in mind when making this decision because they are not very far behind, perhaps a season from making a first team impact.

I find it a shame that Johan Djourou is not available, he has pretty much gone down the same path as Alex Song. A defensive midfielder by trade, coached to learn a new position at center half. He would have been able to cover two positions, the two positions that everyone is urging Arsene to strengthen. He should be back training in a couple months and ready to start the next season but next season is next season, we are talking about the here and now.

Cesc should return in our next fixture and his guile, goals and assists will be vital against a side who has now developed the ‘new management syndrome’ that common disease that turns a bunch of failing individuals into a super team for a one off game.

The Sol Campbell rumours are gaining momentum right now. Wenger’s response to journalists questions were certainly not dismissive so that is very interesting. If it is a possibility then is it dependent of Senderos? The Swiss international apparently wants out of the club and is looking for regular first team football, ideally you would want him to stay and fight for his place. I could see a fully match fit and confident Senderos striking up a good partnership with either Gallas or Vermaelen. He is free to leave at the end of the season if he gets that far at Arsenal so you have to say the he holds the best cards.

I am beginning to slowly come round to the idea of Sol joining us on a short term basis but I suppose it depends on what Sol turns up. The Portsmouth Campbell would be more than welcome for a short period of time but even that Campbell would leave me with questions. Sol Campbell has never been a quick starter. It used to take him a while to get up to speed, so using him as cover could have draw backs but his experience could teach the younger lads a great deal.

Is it worth signing a player for his dressing room influence? Who knows? Well, I guess Arsene knows.

Back tomorrow.
